Umar was a merchant who was the next caliph, and he ruled from 634 CE to 644 CE. The third caliph, Uthman, was a merchant who ruled from 644 CE to 656 CE. His accomplishments included spreading Islam to Afghanistan and eastern Mediterranean, organizing a navy, improving the government, building more roads, bridges, and water canals, and distributing the holy text of the Quran. The forth caliph was Ali, a soldier and writer who ruled from 656 CE to 661 CE. He renovated tax collection and many other government systems.
