         <description><![CDATA[<div>- the Nationalists had initial military advantage, having made further territorial gains and dominating urban centres in northern China, Manchuria, southern and eastern China. <br><br><strong>COMMUNIST ADVANCE and RETREAT in MANCHURIA <br></strong><strong><em>(January -June 1946) <br></em></strong><em>- even </em>with the Soviet troops leaving in May 1946, Mao was able to push into many key cities. <br>- however, the Nationalists pushed back and forced Communists into a Northern retreat.<br>- they were also met with a number of air attacks <br>- by June, it seemed likely that the Communists would have to abandon their last urban stronghold in Manchuria, the city of Harbin. <br><br><strong>the TRUCE in MANCHURIA <br></strong><strong><em>(June-October 1946) <br></em></strong>- June 1946: a ceasefire was arranged by the US and lasted for four months <br>- Nationalists agreed to halt advances into Manchuria <br><em>WHY was a ceasefire arranged:<br></em>- the USA put enormous put enormous pressure on him to agree to a truce<br>- Nationalists forced in Manchuria were overstretched and would benefit from respite to reorganise <br>- Chiang believed that a brief truce would not affect his longer-term chances of victory, given superior position. <br><br><strong>FIGHTING RESUME: <br></strong>- fighting broke out in Manchuria in October 1946<br>- however, the Nationalists failed to dislodge the CCP at Harbin (as they spent four months building their defences) <br>- used 2000 wagonloads of equipment which came over the border of Korea - included heavy artillery, machine guns and rifles.<br>- the time allowed Lin Biao to reorganise  <em><br></em><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>1947: the highpoint of Nationalist success</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Nationalist Advance came after the US organised truce which dictated a four month long ceasefire between the CCP and the GMD in 1946 allowed the Manchurian GMD forces to consolidate for Chiang Kai Shek's push into Central China in a rapid blitzkrieg style war that debased a lot of Communist Forces in Central Chinese cities. <br><br>That said, most of the gains made by the GMD in 1947 were transient given that the swift nature of their warfare did not allow for proper deradicalisation of the populations that they captured.</div>]]></description>
