Description:After the battle of Bataan, Bataan surrendered . After nearly 78,000 prisoners of war were forced to march to a Japanese prison camp. Even private Leon Beck was taken prisoner in the march before escaping .

Outcome:Many became sick, exhausted, and starved. Almost 10,000 troops died on the march. This was later called the Bataan Death March.

Significance:Many Philippians suffered and it showed inhuman and brutal treatment.

Description: General Douglas Mac Author's troops began a campaign in the southwest Pacific. They began by invading Guadalcanal. The battle only ended because they captured enough island to surround the main Japanese base in the region.

Outcome: The captured the island surrounding Japanese base. The Japanese withdrew their ships and aircraft base. They left behind 100,000 troops behind to hold the island

Significance: It marked the first major Allied offensive against Japan.

Description:The Japanese planned to safely proceed with two attacks at once. They had thought the operation was a secret, but American code breakers broke their secret code for conducting operations. It alerted the United States to the attacks on New Guinea that the Japanese had planned. Admiral Nimitz sent two carriers, the Yorktown and the Lexington, to intercept the Japanese in the Coral Sea.

Outcome: The carriers launched all-out airstrikes against each other, and the Japanese sank the Lexington and badly damaged the Yorktown. The Americans were able to stop the Japanese from landing in Guinea's south coast and kept the supply lines to Australia open.

Significance:The Americans were able to stop the Japanese from invading Australia and attacks on New Guinea.

Description:The Americans wanted to take back the Philippines so they assembled an enormous invasion force. Hours after they landed and invaded, MacArthur spoke into the mic and said they had returned. Japanese sent four aircraft carriers toward the Philippines. Americans had left Leyte Gulf and headed north to stop the Japanese. The Japanese raced to Leyte Gulf and ambushed remaining American ships.

Outcome: More than 80,000 Americans were killed. The battle left the city in ruins and more than 100,00 Filipino civilians dead.

Significance:It was the largest naval battle in history and it was the first time Japanese used kamikaze attacks.

Description:This was a key Allie invasion where British and American forces landed in French North Africa. Their goal was to remove German and Italian forces from the region and establish a launch pad for future invasion of Italy.

Outcome:they successfully landed but faced resistance from French forces. It was a major Allie victory because they secured a crucial base.

Significance:Operation Torch was a major victory for the Allies, marking their first significant amphibious landing and the beginning of a campaign that ultimately led to the defeat of Axis forces in North Africa and paved the way for the invasion of Italy. 

Description: After Germany had declared war on the United States they entered American coastal waters. The Americas cargo ship were targeted since they were easy targets due to the night lights.The citizen started to use blackout curtains and dimmed their lights to protect the ships.

Outcome:German submarines sunk about 360 American ships and oil tanks. Oil and fuel had to be rationed because so much was lost. The federal government built the first long-distance pipeline, stretching 1,250 miles. More than 1.2 million tons of shipping were sunk.

Significance:They made a system called the convey system where cargo shipped are now being escorted in groups by warships because of the oil tanks being sunken.

Description: Allied force landed at Anzio and hoped to pass German Gustav line to get to Rome. They landed relatively unopposed and gained ground inland. The Germans quickly reacted and launch counterattacks.

Outcome: The battle went on for months and had more 7,000 Allie deaths. The Allies were able to breakout and eventually captured Rome.

Significance:The Allies were able to capture Rome and had a role in the liberation of Italy.

Description:The Allies had launched an invasion of Normandy, France. Over 150,000 had landed on 5 targeted beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword). The code name they had given this invasion is Operation Overload.

Outcome:The Allies had defeated Nazi Germany. It had essentially ended the second World War.

Significance: It was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of welfare.

Description: The Allies had gone toward German borders and as a last resort for Germany they tried cutting of the Allies supplies coming thru the port of Antwerp. They had caught the Americans by surprise and German troops reached west.Patton's slammed into the German line and Allied aircraft began hitting German fuel deports.German troops driving toward Antwerp were force to stop and the Allies broke through German lines two day later.

Outcome:The United States had won the battle of the bulge. The Germans began to withdraw and suffered more than 100,000 casualties.

Significance:This was the last German offense on the western front.

Description:Bombs fell in Tokyo from American superfortress bombers that traveled many miles. They did not have enough fuel so many of them missed their targets. They needed a place to refuel so they went to Iwo Jima. It had a volcano and lots of ashes. The Japanese built a vast network of concrete bunkers connected by tunnels. 60,000 marines landed on Iwo Jima but were pounded by Japanese artillery.

Outcome:The marines attacked the Japanese bunkers with flamethrowers and explosives. More than 6,800 marines were killed trying to capture the island.

Significance:The Americans were able to capture and had a vital base for bombing campaigns and emergency landings.

Description: American officials believed that the Japanese would not quit unless they were invaded. They prepared an invasion but they needed a place near Japan to stockpile supplies and build up troops. They chose Okinawa and the Japanese instead of defending the beaches, they positioned in the islands mountain to fire machine guns and use artillery.

Outcome:More than 12,000 American soldiers, sailors, and marines died from having to fight their way up steep slopes against the machine guns and artillery fire. In the end Okinawa was captured.

Significance:This gave Americas another base to go against Japan.

Description:Admiral Nimitz wanted to ambush the Japanese fleet. He ordered carriers to take positions near Midway. The Japanese had no idea they were gonna be ambushed and they launched their aircraft against Midway. Their planes were shot down and so they prepared for a second way of attacks.

Outcome:American carriers launched an attack. Their planes caught the Japanese carriers with fuel, bombs, and aircraft exposed on their flight decks. Admiral Yamamoto ordered his remaining ships to retreat.

Significance:The Battle was a turning point. The United States showed the dominance and stopped Japan from their growth in the Pacific.
