Q.1 When was Bord na Mona founded?
Bord na Mona was founded in 1946.
Q.2 What was Bord na Mona's traditional industry?
Bord na Mona's traditional industry was peat and it is still best known for it's peat industry.
Q.3 What businesses has diversified into?
Bord na Mona has diversified into businesses such as Powergen, Waste and Recovery, Bioenergy and Horticulture.
Q.4 Why do you think Bord na Mona as a company has diversified into so many new areas?
I think Bord na Mona has diversified into so many new areas because that way they can make their industry bigger and that way they get more investment and make more money by doing so.
Q.5 Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that can be used over and over again and it is a resource that can never run out. Eg. Water.
Non-renewable energy is energy that will eventually run out and so we will never be able to use again. Eg. Peat.
Q.6 Biomass is burned in the Edenderry power station. What is biomass and is it renewable?
Biomass is a renewable energy that derives from organic waste such as wood, crop waste and from different things we throw in our bin.
Q.7 Is the windfarm an example of renewable or non-renewable energy? Give some information about the windfarm.
The windfarm is an example of renewable energy. In March 2015, Bord na Móna switched on a new more sustainable energy supply when it opened the Mountlucas Wind Farm. Situated in the Midlands of Ireland, the 84MW wind energy facility can supply the Irish grid with enough electricity to power 45,000 homes. Renewable energy, like that produced at Mountlucas, is contributing to Ireland’s EU targets and helping to decarbonise the Irish power supply.
Q.8 Why wind energy?
Electricity is the very life blood of a modern economy and is essential to both our economic and social well-being. At a fundamental level, we need electricity to live, work and play. The world finds itself is in a situation where there are rising concerns over energy security, global warming and eventual fossil fuel depletion – leading to an increased interest in all forms of renewable energy, particularly wind power.

Wind is a significant renewable resource which can be deployed in a cost effective manner in Ireland and can secure our energy future in a sustainable way.

In 2009, the EU introduced the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC), encouraging the creation of forms of power that are less harmful to the environment. This Directive means that by 2020, 20% of energy used across the EU must be renewable. Each Member State now has a target defining how much of the energy it consumes must be renewable by this deadline.

Over 80 years ago, but in 1934, they founded the turf development board.

⦁	What was Bord na Móna´s traditional industry?
The reason of the formation of Bord na Móna was the development and improvement of the turf industry.

⦁	What bisinesses has Bord na Móna diversified into?
It´s currently operating six business units:
-Powergen: Generation of power.

-Biomass: Biomass is fuel that is developed from organic materials, a renewable and sustainable source of energy used to create
electricity or other forms of power.

-Resource recovery: is the separation of certain materials from the waste we produce, with the aim of using them again or turning
them into new raw materials for use again.

-Peat: Peat is a heterogeneous mixture of more or less decomposed plant (humus) material that has accumulated in a water-saturated environment and in the absence of oxygen.

-Fuels: materials such as coal, gas, or oil that is burned to produce
heat or power.

-Horticulture: the art or practice of garden cultivation and
management.

Over the years, Bord na Móna has expanded and diversified it´s portfolio businesses to include biomass procurement and supply, power
generation; peat based and renewable, waste recovery,
domestic fuel products and professional and consumer
horticulture products.

⦁	Why do you think Bord na Móna as a company has diversified into so many areas?
I personally think that Bord na Móna has diversified more and more in
the past years to offer better services for big scale and domestic use,
and to adapt their business to nowadays energy necesities.

As the world keeps evoluting, bisinesses also have to upgrade,
specifically these ones, that have a huge responsability, because other
businesses depend on Bord na Móna.

⦁	Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable forms of energy.

Nonrenewable energy resources, like coal, nuclear, oil, and natural gas,
are availabl in limited supplies. This is usually due to the long time it
takes for them to be replenished. Renewable resources are replenished
naturally and over relatively short periods of time. The five major
renewable energy resources are solar, wind, water (hydro), biomass, and
geothermal.

⦁	Biomass is burnes in the Edenderry power station. What is biomass? Is it renewable?
Biomass is any organic matter-wood, crops, seaweed, animal wastes-
that can be used as an energy source. Biomass is probably our oldest
source of energy. For thousands of years, people have burned wood to
heat their homes and cook their food.

Biomass gets its energy from the sun. . During a process called
photosynthesis, sunlight gives plants the energy they need to convert
water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and sugars. The sugars,
called carbohydrates, supply plants (or the animals that eat plants) with
energy.

Biomass is a renewable energy source because its supplies are not
limited. We can always grow trees and crops, and people will always
produce garbage.

⦁	Is the windfarm an example of renewable or non-renewable energy? Give some information about the windfarm.
Wind farms are part of renewable sources of energy.
Wind power is growing worldwide as a major source of renewable
energy. To meet the demand for alternative energy sources, large
numbers of wind power generators are being deployed on wind farms
both at land and sea.

Wind has been used for thousands of years as a source of power.
Sailboats are one of the purest, and simplest examples of the wind as
power source. Before the advent of electricity, windmills were used
primarily to pump water and grind, or "mill" grain. The power of the wind
was used to turn the blades of a rotor, which was connected to grinding
stones or a pumping mechanism. Wind power was thus converted into
mechanical energy and was a more efficient way to perform everyday
tasks.

The popularity of using the energy in the wind has always risen with the
price of fossil fuels. When fuel prices fell after World War II, interest in
wind turbines faded. But when the price of oil skyrocketed in the 1970s,
so did worldwide interest in wind turbine generators.

In 1992, Bord na Móna commissioned Ireland’s first commercial wind
farm in Bellacorick, Co. Mayo. Over the years, we have committed to
investing in the development of wind farms – contributing to Ireland
meeting its 2020 renewable energy target, while also helping Ireland to
build a security of energy supply.

Bord na Móna currently has three commissioned wind farms, that are
supplying energy to the National Grid.
