Teaching my first grade son while we’ve been doing remote learning has made me realize what a pleasure it is to teach 8th grade!!! I am sorry that you missed out on the end of the year events that help bond the 8th grade class each year. I am sad to have missed all of the events myself! It’s OK to be sad but do your best to keep your head up and look to the future. Our lives will go back to normal some time soon and you will be complaining about having to wake up so early for school and having so many activities that you’re too busy to do your homework! We started out the year reading Night (notice how the title is italicized), and facing the harsh reality of Elie Wiesel’s past. You all showed me your maturity while respecting this text. We read the short story, “Flowers for Algernon” (notice how the title is in quotes), and we were reminded that not all conflicts can be resolved and to always be kind to everyone. The Outsiders reminds us that there are stereotypes and cliques, but we are all people with feelings, challenges, and goals. You participated in Socratic Seminars, and I am always so proud of you all when I watch these, as quiet students feel confident enough to contribute, and talkative students discuss with passion. We also had Music Analysis Days, and this activity was more than practicing identifying Literary Devices. Now, wherever I am, when I hear a song that one of you played, I am reminded of this class and I am reminded of the themes that you pointed out. I hope these songs remind you of positive memories at Central, and the themes help you through any obstacles in high school. While the themes we have discovered in books, short stories, songs, and poems are all meaningful and a part of your journey forward, it is important to reflect on your final assignment in this class: something that you are proud of during quarantine. Before even entering high school, you all are already Warriors, ready to face obstacles, disappointments, or anything that comes your way. You all found the positive when so much was taken from you. I think the most important things we all can take away from this experience is to have empathy for others, to be grateful for the little things, and to find the silver lining (notice the idiom here). There is always a message to be found, a connection to be made, and a story to be told. Keep this in mind when contributing to class discussions! Being a “quarantined graduate” is a chapter in your story. Have confidence and perseverance as you enter high school and write the next chapter. I feel so lucky to have gotten to know you all. I too, have learned so much, as we are all really in this together. Remember to always be confident and stay true to yourself...and don’t forget to cite textual evidence!
