We have been doing Ganggangsullae to pray for good farming. Chuseok is the time to start harvesting crops, so it usually played during Chuseok. (In some regions, Ganggangsullae is played on the day of the first full moon of the lunar year when farming begins.)
Also, it has been played to improve cooperation among the players. It is a game that we don’t play well today, but in elementary school, students learn and enjoy it as a traditional game.

It was during the war between Joseon and Japan, in 1592. When Yi Sun-sin was in  Haenam(해남), the number of his army was very small compared to the enemy. So Yi sun sin gathered the women of the village and dressed up as a military man. He made the women dance around the campfire holding their hands. The Japanese army was scared and ran away when they saw them in the sea. The person who has the best singing voice leads the group while sings the giving part, which is the lyrics, while the others choruses 강강술래 together.

After a while the song becomes even faster, and the women start to dance.

Then one person goes inside the circle made by others and dances freely. (This is called 남생이 놀이.)

This progress repeats for about 4days.

However, unlike 널뛰기, 투호, 공기놀이 and more, it is perhaps the only one that involves singing in it, which intrigued me. Moreover, I have some experience in 강강술래. In elementry school, we had a session in P.E. class that involved 강강술래. Me and my friends had a great time dancing in a circle while holding hands.
