Hi Ms Athel! Thank you so much for your time every Thursday for Reading Group as well as planning all the materials for us! I really gained a lot of insight towards how I frame my relationships and have much to take away from what I have experienced. It was not easy to break down these difficult sociologial concepts, but you really kept us engaged thoughout when you simplified these concepts into things that were more relatable for us to understand. We really appreciate your personal experiences and passion for the topic, and thank you also for inviting the two guests to share too! I hope that you had an enjoyable time teaching in CAPT and I'm sure your future students would also enjoy your lessons too :) thank you so much!

-Han Ming

Hello Ms Athel!

Through the past few weeks that we've all been together, I think we have definitely learnt a lot from you. Seeing your passion for mental health and your desire to help this group of people using the concept of social capital has been heartwarming. I have enjoyed all your lessons and the sharings that were planned!

As I mentioned during our first session, sociology is not something that interests me as I felt it was very theory-based and dry but this RG enabled me to see how such theories were applied in society which made it a lot more interesting.

I really appreciate your effort throughout the past few weeks and I wish you all the best as you continue to impart knowledge to your future students! :)

I LOVE your bubbly and cheerful personality HEHE hope to see you around capt!!

Enrica

Hiiiii Ms Athel,

Thank you for organizing this Reading Group! I really appreciate the effort and energy that you put out ever week (even when you are sick)! Your passion for helping others and teaching really shines through! I would especially like to thank you for creating a class environment that is safe and productive for discussions, it encouraged me to share and listen openly.

In all honestly, Social Capital wasn't a phrase that I ever contemplated (I don't think I even heard the two words used together prior to this module), but these sessions has taught me to be aware of (1)my privilege as a University and CAPT and (2) the strength of weak ties. I might fail to understand the concept in its entirety (there's so many different definitions and so much nuance) but I will definitely try to adopt this lens when deliberating solutions in the future. Lastly, I would also like to thank you for joining CAPT! I think that you make an excellent addition to the culture and I am sure that you will impact and shape the lives of many many CAPTains! Take care of yourself and stay safe!

p.s: Hope you won't forget us BAHAHAHA

Marcus Jude Wong Shyuan

2023

Thank you for planning the Reading Group for the past few weeks! Your cheerful and friendly personality has been a great addition to the otherwise bland classroom environment. You've made every lesson so engaging, with each guest speaker you invite and each discussion we had as a class. Reading Group has truly been a breath of fresh air during this rather stressful Year 3 in university, and I wish I could have made it for more sessions. It was interesting and insightful to delve deeper into the concept of social capital deeper and how it is ingrained in different aspects of our lives. More interesting is the link between mental heath and social capital, and how one's social capital can play a significant role in addressing one's mental well-being. Thank you once again for the insightful lessons you've provided, I am definitely glad to have taken this Reading Group. All the best in your future endeavours and I know the future batches of CAPT students will be equally charmed by your teaching and personality! :)

(P.S. Thank you for reaching out to me and checking up on me just now!)

Yune

It is definitely not easy to break down such broad and complex terminologies and concepts into something so digestible for us to learn and consistently keeping us engaged.

On that note, welcome to CAPT and hope that you feel at home here!

Hi Ms Athel!

I wasn't too sure what to expect for this reading group, given that the idea of 'Social Capital' is pretty complex and broad. I was also kinda worried that I would be very lost as a non-FASS major LOL

But I think that over the weeks, you have done an AMAZING job at guiding us through unpacking the idea(s) and seeing how it makes sense with some context, such as mental health. You are a great teacher and I am sure any student under your charge will feel the same and grow alot under you.

I really appreciated the pieces of wisdom given here and there, like the 3-pass reading method and the emphasis on getting us to understand the concepts.

I feel that you planted some very important seeds of thought to everyone during this reading group, and I am sure that these will bear fruit for everyone here, when we find ourselves drawing on the theoretical concepts we learnt in your class!! (I think the concepts taught here are able to be applied across different fields of study, even computing!)

In particular I want to say that I enjoyed the in-class activities and especially the field trips and guest speakers. It is REALLY something else to see theory come to life, especially for humanities!

I hope we have been good 'guinea pigs' for the course! Hopefully we get to see a "social capital" senior seminar sometime soon!!

Hi Prof Athel! Time really flies, and I just want to say thank you for taking the time to take us through the Social Capital RG It's really cool that you got your dream job to teach in CAPT and I hope that taking all of us for Reading Group the last 8 weeks was a fulfilling and fun first experience into teaching here! I really appreciate the effort that you put into meticulously planning out the different weeks of the sessions for us, the attempts to make things interesting for us through discussions and different mediums/fieldtrips/guest lectures, for being chill to banter and joke around with us, bring the meanings and to also draw out the learning points for us even share little nuggets of cool wisdom that you picked up from your experiences! It all shows your passion for teaching and what you do and hope for us to take away things from your class, and it was something nice for all of us seniors to do! Hope that as you continue your time in CAPT that CAPT will also become a home, just like it was for all of us seniors who enjoyed our 2 years here and found our 2nd homes (or ✨social capital✨) here! Take care and God bless :))

-Lorcan

I was also a little afraid I wouldn't be able to understand more "theoretical and complex concepts" due to not being a FASS major LOL (even though I did go through CHS modules).

Thank you for teaching this reading group and sharing your passion for human relationships with the class. It was very insightful in how I will perceive and frame my relationships with other people. It wasn't easy to break down the concepts (and honestly it was hard to understand the readings) but I'm glad that I at least can remember some concepts like "the strength of weak ties" because of how you simplified the concepts. I really enjoyed listening to the guest speakers because it made the "theoretical concepts" that much less theoretical and more applicable to real life.

Thank you for also engaging everyone, it's not always that we have a nice, friendly, engaging tutor who will interact with us outside of class. I'm sure you might not have thought much of it, but it did make my day after a long day.

I'm sure you will be able to continue spreading your words of wisdom with the other CAPTains.
