Transcendentalism is a 19th-century philosophy and literary movement that emphasized the power of one person, the importance of nature, and the belief that truth and understanding come from within. Transcendentalism teaches that people are good, that they are connected to nature and the universe, and that they should trust themselves rather than conform to society's expectations. A big part of this philosophy was being true to yourself and trusting your inner voice, even if others disagree. Ralph Waldo said, "To be great is to be misunderstood." Being different or misunderstood is often a sign of true greatness and knowledge beyond what society pushes at people everyday.
