At the 1912 Olympics, Jim Thorpe won gold medals in the pentathlon and the decathlon. He was outstanding, and he was widely recognised as one of the greatest athletes of the Games. However, all change after it was discovered that he had previously received  payments for playing semi-professional baseball, which, according to the rules at the time, made him ineligible to compete as an amateur in the Olympics.
