It is a complicated yet some what romantic love story which follows the usual heterosexual stereotypes. In the original version, the backstory of Belle and the Beast is given in detail- this slowly changes overtime as each version of the tale gets shortened.

The changes that Beaumont made to Villeneuve's tale reflected the social and political concerns and changes happening in France at the time (1711-1780). Even dating all the way back to the 1700s, the same stereotypes are still prevalent in the story and no signs of LGBTQ support is shown.

The happy ending is due to the love between Beauty and the Beast when Beauty declared the love for the Beast as he transformed into the prince. The film makes a point for the LGBTQ community with director Bill Condon incorporating a “gay moment” for one of its characters, LeFou. Although this was a big step for the film, the character LeFou is not one of the main characters, much so a supporting character. So, although it was a successful touch, the main characters still follow the normal stereotypes of love. 

The moment gave a huge leap forward for the film industry, as the inclusion of LGBTQ moments in film (especially children film) is not always common. The film gave off an acceptance and inclusion for all LGBTQ people.

The older versions of Beauty and the Beast were strictly heterosexual oriented and as the times go by, there are little hints and touches of LGBTQ moments- whether it be a slight alteration or a reference. This was seen even worse as this is not the first time that Disney has made an LGBTQ character an enemy. In my story, I will most definitely not make this mistake that Disney made.

Although this is specifically a piece of children literature, Call & Inglis does not hesitate to show the love between Beauty and the Beast. This version not only shows the love development between the two characters, but also emphasizes the Beast's aggressiveness and hostility.
