I appreciate the mirror metaphor --it has a long history as a description of mediated experience, whether through an abstraction like a dataset, or any other medium. To be able to grasp some human experiences through more direct media than numbers is of great value --at the same time, there is a sense in which the light that illuminates the mirror, showing us what is reflected, can also distort our view. So numbers do some work providing clarity in illumination.

The Quilt is both deeply humanizing and flawed (in terms of data representation)

This really made me think about who is and isn't represented in this example of humanization. People who have a square had to have a friend or family member who was willing and able to make a square, and who was connected enough to community or the news to have heard about it. As you said, over time a greater effort was made to include stories from outside of the US, however it is still deeply skewed in that direction.

Thank you for bringing up the point that when humanizing data, it is also important to look at the whole entire process of interacting with data. I was thinking a lot about the message but you bring up a good point - it is also about data collection and analysis!!

The metaphor you have chosen is a very interesting metaphor and very well explained. I especially appreciate your description that "The complexity of your 3-dimensional surface is flattened into just 2 dimensions" in both shadows and data.

I think the shadow metaphor is a really powerful one - it touches on the ambiguity, distortion, and invisibility that are all characteristic of data. And thinking about how we play with the shadows of ourselves and others - there is tons to discover from those human interactions.

Your data diary is a power description of the abstraction and commodification of human experience. The sea of numbers drowns, blocks and obscures human experience --moving in the direction of commodifying the human, instead of humanizing an over-commodified society. Still, how can we understand and organize the world we interact with one another as humans in, if not with some method of accounting?
A deep spur to thought.

I LOVE and agree with your metaphor of a mirror. It shows a reflection of you, but is that reflection really "you"? It can be distorted, it can be backward...It's also interesting because many people would say that a reflection is showing truth (ie what you look like). But as we know, data is not reality...!

This is such a great example of humanizing data, about such an important topic. I love that it depicts multiple methods of humanizing data. First, it helps readers understand exactly how big 5,000 really is. Second, it highlights specific stories of individuals within that data set. Thank you for your thoughtful reflections, too. I learned a lot!
