Writing has always been my weakness, but it is a very important part, especially for a pre-master student in business, because the essay accounts for the majority of our total score. To this end , at the beginning of the semester, I gave myself a plan to practice writing.My plan started in the second week. From the second week, my main practice was paraphrase, which refers to retelling other people's opinions in our own language, generally changing the way of expression, part of speech or using alternative words. It is a technique that is often used in the process of writing academic essay. When we cite other people's opinions, we must paraphrase. If we copy the original text, we will be considered plagiarism. In the beginning, I just can simply use the replacement word, or change the part of speech, most of the time I copied the original text. However, after a period of practice, I have improved in this area and know the correct way of paraphrase. First of all, I should understand the article, the main content, and then express it in my own language. When I don’t know how to replace the word, I would search in flax collocation, which is a great tool I use to search academic words, and I try again and again. During this time, I also practice grammar, because my tutor said that I have many expressions that are not formal, and I think I should avoid short sentences when I writing. To this end, I chose some Chinese materials, which are about several strategies for retaining talent, and then translate into English. In the beginning, my language expression was very limited, I don’t know what academic terms are, and how the to combine short sentences became a long sentence. However, after studying these days, I feel that my grammar and academic writing skills have improved significantly, especially in the course of the academic language6-lengths sentence, which inspired me. When writing long sentences, I can use conjunctions such as in spite of, despite, although, though, therefore, as a result, and civilization, and use semi-colons/colons/commas, relative clauses and co-ordinating conjunctions to combine sentences. I am very happy that my writing skills have improved. Although my writing has improved in the last semester, I think I still need to do more to improve my wiring, it will benefit to my future study. In general, our essay structure is, the first paragraph is introduction, the last paragraph is conclusion, and the main body is the process of the argument. I think main body writing is the most important paragraph of our essay, so my ILS2 is focus on main body writing.To be honest, paragraph writing is not easy for me, so at the beginning of the second semester, I decided to keep practicing. In the first semester, although I know how to organize paragraph, I just know it includes a topic sentence, argument and citation. And the aim of topic sentence is to tell readers the main idea of this paragraph, argument is the process to persuade readers, and citation is to support my argument. In the semester 2, I am more aware of how the paragraph should be written. In addition to listening to the tutor in class, I also practiced paragraph writing myself after class.Firstly, topic sentence is not just the main idea of a paragraph, it states the subject and the controlling idea for the rest of the paragraph, is the most general sentence in the paragraph, so it should be brief, and should be linked to my thesis. Secondly, when I provide evidence to support my argument, if I can use synthesis, for example, quote two or more opinions, “ The prevalence of racial discrimination in the workplace greatly reduces work efficiency and has an impact on employee psychology (Cox,2016 and Jay,2018)”, my argument would be more powerful. And if I want to emphasize someone’s point of view, I could write “Beale argues that……”.Thirdly, in the process of argument, my voice is the most important, which I can show the reader what I am thinking, what my view is and how I critically discuss the topic. And when I put forward my own point of view, I should use hedging language, for example, “it is likely that ……, it is possible that…, it might be…..”.After a semester of study, my writing has improved, I got a B-grade in this time writing exam. Although it is not a very high grade, It proves that my contribution is effective.
