How can you resist a Lent of exterior motives?

Being intentional. Not appealing to our own selves but doing everything intently for the Lord, especially in our fasting, prayer and almsgiving this Lent

Sitting with the Lord in silence and bringing everything to Him. That we take the time to pray or read the Word of God. Maybe spend a bit of time with Him in adoration.

Go to confession and bring our vulnerable and weakened selves to Him. That we become in tune with Him as we ask for forgiveness from our sins.

Symbolism of Dust or Ashes

mortality: after the commission of the first sin, we are subject not just to suffering, but to death. Every human being is mortal and we go back (after our death) to a state of being dust and ashes.

repentance (Job 42:6): "therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

penance (Daniel 9:3): during intense periods of prayer, ancient Jews would wear a sackcloth that would scratch and irritate the skin causing suffering and it would be a kind of penance.

fast and abstain from food & drink

interceding for others (1 Maccabees 3:47 & Esther 14:1-3)

Ash Wednesday

The practice of ashes can be seen as an outward sign of inward repentance, showing humility. We are made out of nothing and to nothing we will return.

In an ideal world, I would always be able to extend forgiveness to anybody, no matter what the sin is. However, in reality I can find it really hard to forgive particularly nasty actions against me. Generally, I like to go away from those who committed the sin and spend some alone time with God to process what has happened. This time helps me come to a better understanding of the context and situation which helps me a lot in forgiving those involved. Overall, while it can take some time, I feel that I can usually forgive those who have sinned against me, especially when given time.
