After 3 months of fighting, the Germans were able to capture 90% of the city. However, Georgy Zhukov who lead the soviet union, planned a counter offensive attack against the Germans. Hitler ordered that Paulus should fight to the last bullet, and to encourage Paulus, he promoted him to field marshal. However, by the end of January 1943, the Germans could do nothing else but surrender. Hitler was angry with General Paulus for surrendering. He expected Paulus to fight to the death or commit suicide, rather than surrender. However, Paulus surrendered the army in the southern sector on January 31st while General Schreck surrendered the northern group on February 2nd, 1943.

The failure of the German Army was nothing short of a disaster. A complete army group was lost at Stalingrad and 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner. With such a massive loss of manpower and equipment, the Germans simply did not have enough manpower to cope with the Russian advance to Germany when it came.

Soviet and Germany invade Poland from both sides. Hitler wanted Russia's fertile farmland and oil rich fields. Hitler's first invasion was to east under the name operation Barbarossa. This operation took place near the volga river which was a communication centre and strategic industrial centre. In August, Germans reached the outskirts of the city and began an aerial bombardment, trying to break the supply lines coming from the east.

- considered a turning point in WW2 for the allies' victory (first major loss for Germans in the war which stopped their advances further into Europe)
- Germans troops were weakened
- Canada had something to do with this battle
After the Germans lost in Stalingrad, they did not advance any farther into eastern Europe or Russia. As the Soviet army gained strength and spent a lot of the rest of World War II fighting the Germans to get the territory that Russia had lost back. This was significant because Germans were no longer expanding in at least one direction. Also, they were losing territory in the same direction
