A herd is a group of animals living in a cohesive unit. In a herd it is easier to survive because one organism only needs to be faster than the slowest one. It is easier to hunt for prey. Part of the group can hunt while the other can be "lookout" for any predators. Foraging becomes easier when there are more organisms looking for the same thing.

Herding has become an adaptation because when an animal is hunting or searching for food they constantly have to stop and look for predators so animals who figured out that being with others from their same species would increase the chance of locating a predator faster and fighting it off would survived longer. Natural selection took its course making herding a social adaptation because animals lived longer when they lived in groups.

As a human we are by natural very social beings. I was born into a family with two parents and 3 siblings. I have been able to see so many benefits to living in a group or family unit like many species do. I have learned how to share, communicate, be independent, work hard through the examples of my parents etc. I have been protected against homelessness, starvation, poverty etc from living with my family. The benefits of social behavior is that organisms are better protected and are able to survive longer.
