Christopher Marlowe

Born the 26th of February of 1546, Christopher Marlowe lived during the same time as the great Shakespeare, often considered to be just below him when it came to there writing. In fact, Shakespeare and many other poets built off of Marlowe's work in areas such as language and the blank-verse line. Christopher had attended college at the KIng's School on a full scholarship when they had realized the extent of his abilities in writing. Marlowe paved the way for a lot of other poets, creating the Edward II which was the "earliest successful history play", which was followed by works from Shakespeare (www.marlowe-society.org). Christopher Marlowe was an important figure of his time but unfortunately, his life came to a sudden end when he was murdered at the young age of 29.

Sources:
“Christopher Marlowe.” Poetry Foundation, Poetry Foundation, www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/christopher-marlowe.
“Announcements.” The Marlowe Society, www.marlowe-society.org/.

"Its simple, musical language and fanciful imagery create an idyll of innocent love (Stein)"

The shepherd has an idealized image of romance. He pictures his relationship with the nymph "as a game enjoyed in an eternal spring", ignoring the realities of life: the "cold winters" and all of the time he will be separated from his love tending to his flock (Stein).
search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=lfh&AN=103331POE19509650000506&site=ehost-live

The Passionate Shepherd's offer is rejected because "the material goods that [he] has to offer will fade with time".The shepherd's proposition is "conditional". In order for the nymph to make the right decision, the shepherd would have to guarantee that he could provide her with all of the pleasures that he promises her, which is debatable (Huth 57).
search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=brb&AN=509293423&site=ehost-live

Theme of the poem

The poem takes on a happy theme, with the promise that they will be happy together. We see continuous promises of gifts and reasons to convince the nymph to take the lonely shepherd's hand in marriage. "The Shepherds’ Swains shall dance and sing

For thy delight each May-morning" The shepherd promise to do anything to make this nymph happy. Unfortunately the poem fails to promise true and unconditional love and instead focus on showering her with gifts in order to get her to take his hand.

Throughout this love poem, "The Shepherd" is confessing his love to the Nymph. As he is doing this, he explains many ways of how he can obtain her love, through material objects. There is a lot of irony in this. Many say that love cannot be bought, but earned.
