1. Very low voltage and current are enough to drive the LED.

2. The response time is very less – only about 10 nanoseconds.
3. The device does not need any heating and warm up time.
4. Miniature in size and hence lightweight.
5. Have a rugged construction and hence can withstand shock and vibrations.
6. An LED has a lifespan of more than 20 years.

WHY IS THE LED FORWARD BIASED?

The LED is forward biased so as to enable the movement of majority carriers i.e. electrons from the n side to the p side, and holes from p side to n side. Under the forward bias, the concentration of minority carriers increases on either side of junction boundary. For example, under the forward bias the concentration of electrons(minority carriers on p side)increases. These free electrons in the conduction band combine with the holes in the valence band and this leads to the emission of energy, due to the specific compounds that these diodes are made of, they emit energy in the form of light.Under a reverse bias, movement of majority carriers across junction wouldnt take place therefore recombination will not take place. This would also result in the damage of the LED since it has very low values of breakdown voltage.
