Matthias Schleiden proposed that all plant tissues are composed of cells. His statement was the first generalized statement about cells. This statement was that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants. These observations and statements were made in 1838.

Schwann tested Schleiden’s theory on animal tissues, as the theory worked for plants. This theory works for all living things. It ended debates that plants and animals were different in structure and he created important statements about cells. These statements were that "cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells" and "the cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms".

He was important scientist throughout history and he observed cork cells through a compound microscope. He was the first to name what he saw as “cells”. His discovery led to the understanding of cells as the smallest units of life. This was the foundation of the cell theory! He contributed greatly.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek contributed to the cell theory because he did detailed drawings of microorganisms enlarged up to 2000 diameters and he discovered spermatozoa and published drawings of them. His most important discovery/contribution was made in 1674 when he was using a microscope to examine pond water. He observed dozens of protists (“animalcules”), as well as spirogyra (green algae). This was the discovery of single-cell organisms. Anton also made other contributions in 1683 such as the first protozoa and bacteria.
