When observing the development of behaviours, mental notes are made and at the end of the day the behaviour is recorded. This can be seen as an anecdotal observation. This is done so we can identify the pattern of the behaviour, and look at the environmental factors which may cause it. 
When observing and engaging with a young person completing a piece of work, work samples are taken to identify the developmental pattern throughout the timeline of completion of a certain task. I would also write down the level of independence the young person had when completing the task, the amount and type of support given and also whether any verbal encouragement or prompts were given. This would be written in past tense, and help to identify any pattern of development.

This is because in year 2 pupils are more aware when you observe them and tend to act up or behave in a way they think you want them to behave. It’s much more reliable to observe them while they are getting on with their work and behaving as they usually would. Pupils work is also used to monitor their development. Work books and homework books are regularly marked by the teacher to track their progress and any concerns are shared with the teaching assistants in order for them to support pupils further on a specific area of development. When I helped out between nursery and reception class, although the same methods were used, the use of media was the main source of recording development. By using photos/videos it allows you to capture moments and then go back to them if you want to extend by making a written observation based off a video you took. It gives you more time to analyse it.After doing an observation on a child, we record which stage of development the child is at eg. E (emerging), D (developing) or A (achieved).
