How I got to the Union army.

When I was at the plantation, our master was the meanest man on the East Coast, he was like fired up rattle snake. When we was down there, my wife, who worked as a housemaid, over heard the Master say goodbye to his two sons and they goin' to fight in some war against the Union, and somethin' bout' ending slavery. So I thought to myself, I'm not doing myself any good down here. I'm going to take my wife and myself up to the safe land and fight for the Union. So when the sun sunk under the trees we set off, we went for miles and miles, from Mississippi to Ohio with Bounty hunters, dogs and rushing river crossings. When we got to the border we didn't really know how to handle ourselves, we got to Ohio I didn't expect this many Black people. We started to head straight for New York City because I heard I could apply for the army there. But the only problem with getting to New York is that I don't have a horse or a carriage and I don't have any money to buy a horse or get a ride in a carriage. I walked for days upon days and finally made it to New York City. I applied for the army but they wouldn't take me because I didn't look old enough for war. After a few day of begging and pleading, they finally let me in, so me and my wife went back down to a base in Southern Ohio where I was non combat and worked as a nurse and cook for a week. But I new that I'll get my turn.

The Civil war had a very great impact on me, I was very determined to fight for what I thought was right and to fight for not being treated as property. But going though all that just to get in the army, I really hoped it was worth it. They had a squad just for Blacks, turns out 10% of the entire army was black, in fact 179,000 of the army was black. The food was pretty bad, but at least they fed us, we usually ate rotten meat and beans, which explains why so many of us are getting diseases. I also have noticed that there's a lot of down time most days are slow so we just practice our aim, play cards or wash clothes. The captain keeps telling us we'll get our turn but I'm losing hope. Then we had our first battle, we were to sneak around the confederate while they fight the main group and attack from behind. The battle lasted all day, we needed to stay out of range from cannons so we took a very wide turn. When we got behind them we started to take fire I took out two rebs, but they were quickly returning fire and my captain was yelling to fall back and I turned around, took a step then I could feel a stabbing pain in my left leg. I had been shot. The captain hauled me up then we hobbled off the battle field, him and two others dragged and carried me 4 miles back to camp. They through me on a bed and started to rip clothes off, the hospital tent sounded like a haunted house. Men screaming in pain, nurses crying, they said they can save the leg, they gave me a shot of whiskey and I woke up 3 days later with a splint on my leg. This was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Nights were better we slept on cots and they gave us pillow's and blankets. I don't know if I can handle this much more, the screaming, the crying, the pain.
