Specifically in mathematics, it applies to the idea that a student is able to go through a series of steps to complete whatever task they are doing. <br><br>Conceptual understanding is knowing why certain measures are being taken to complete the task at hand. Mathematically speaking, it would be a student understanding what method they are using to solve a particular problem.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Conceptual understanding helps one to understand the reasoning behind the procedure and therefore should precede before the procedural fluency. For example, when teaching students about the volume of a cylinder, students can be shown a concrete example of a coin or any circular object stacked on top of each other. Seeing this, they would come to a conclusion that volume is the area of the circular object times the height (the third dimension that is added by stacking the coins), since cylinder can be thought of many circles stacked on top of each other. By doing so, they develop the concept behind the formula which makes the math more meaningful to students. <br>Conceptual understanding is the ability to comprehend the "why" behind the process, whereas procedural fluency just<br> allows one to follow the steps to reach an answer.</div>]]></description>
