By February, Shackleton ordered his crew to abandon the usual routines and convert the ship into a winter station. Gradually, the ice-encased ship began to drift north along with other ice floes. Spring weather arrived in September, but as the ice began to break, it put pressure on the ship’s hull. In October, the hull broke and water began to pour in. It would be impossible to continue their course in the Endurance. The crew was forced to abandon ship and cart away as many supplies as they could carry on the ice.
Shackleton and his men camped for two months on the ice, hoping they would drift 250 miles to Paulet Island, where there was a cache of additional supplies. They attempted to trek across the ice to the island, carrying their food, survival gear, and three lifeboats weighing one ton each, but the trip wasn’t possible. They set up a camp, made trips back for more supplies, and waited for the ice floes to take them closer to land. This plan failed—they were blocked from Paulet Island by ice that was impossible to cross.
In April 1916, the ice floe split in two, and Shackleton’s crew were forced to abandon camp. They piled into the three lifeboats to set course for Elephant Island, the nearest land mass. After a five-day journey, the exhausted men put their feet on solid ground for the first time in over a year.
But the crew was still in danger. Elephant Island was remote, and there was no chance of rescue. To save his men and himself, Shackleton would have to row the lifeboat 720 more miles to South Georgia Island, where a whaling station could provide rescue for the stranded explorers. The ship’s carpenter made improvements to the lifeboat, strengthening it and adding a deck before Shackleton and five other crew members, including Frank Worsley, set out.
