There were no real calls for unification until Napoleon's invasion and creation of the Kingdom of Italy. After Napoleon's defeat Italy returned to independence. The Italian war for independence had failed but demonstrated that the king of Sardinia would lead the unification movement. During the France-Prussian war Italians moved into Rome to declare the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The alliances created would help start World War I.

The unification between Prussia and Austria grew stronger and a sovereign was formed tying German economies together. Because of this Austria was pushed away, causing the revolutions of 1848. It was voted by Germans that Prussian leadership was the right decision. Prussian leaders in control made the Prussia force dominant and in 1871 the German empire was formed.

Regional rivalries broke out in Gran Colombia while Bolivar led the final campaigns and his reputation wasn't enough to hold the country together after his return. Venezuela broke away in 1829, Ecuador following soon after. On June 24, 1821, Bolivar's troops, reinforced by General Jose Antonio Paez, defeated the main royalist army at the Battle of Carabobo. During the 1840s the demand for Venezuela’s agricultural declined on the world market. This resulted in economic difficulties, which contributed to the increasing resistance to the Conservative authority. The Liberal leaders joined the Conservative resistance and in March 1858 they brought the Monagas dynasty to an end. General Paez returned in 1861 to restore Conservative hegemony for two years, but in 1863, final victory went to the Liberals. This was led by the generals Juan Falcon and Antonio Guzman Blanco.

Bolivian Independence, achieved after centuries of Spanish rule, was a process that was over a span of more than 15 years, from 1809 to 1825. It had involved several battles and countless deaths. This new and independent country, Bolivia, would get its name from Simon Bolivar, the military and political leader that changed the course of Colonial South America. Local government was the responsibility of the Royal Audience directed by a President. In 1776 a reorganization of territories was ordered by Spain and Upper Peru had joined the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata against the wishes of the Viceroyalty of Peru which would stand to lose valuable natural resources. The first nationalist uprisings in Bolivia occurred in 1809 when the government juntas of Charcas and La Paz were formed as a reaction to the events in Spain. The chaotic situation in Spain was happening again in Bolivia. The remaining royalist forces were easily defeated at El Callao.

When the United States announced its independence from Great Britain in 1776, Central Europe was an area of around 300 independent states. Those who favored greater Germany believed in the role of Austria, which was mostly made up of Germans and the Habsburg rulers in German affairs. Other ideas that were thought of during 1848 were the abolition of privilege of the aristocracy, the creation of constitutions in several of the German states, a more fair tax system, and freedom of religion. By mid-1849 the revolution died down and hope of unifying the German states was ignored for the time being. This brief war pinned Prussia and their allies against Austria and other German states. The third and final act of German unification was the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, led by Bismarck to draw the western German states into alliance with the North German Confederation.
