To begin our whole group instruction and discussion on things that go, I read a familiar text to my students. The story, "Little Blue Truck," was initially used for our farm unit with an emphasis on the animals and sounds in the text. With our transportation unit, we focused on vehicles (i.e., pick-up truck and dump truck) and the tracks that they made.

Next, students retold the story in a whole-group setting, using teacher-made manipulatives that correlated to the characters within the text. This was a great opportunity to not only review previously learned material (i.e., animals/sounds), but practice learning unfamiliar material (i.e., vehicles, specifically dump truck), answer "wh" questions, first/then, prepositions, etc.

In the final step of our whole-group instruction for "Things That Go!", students got to participate in a hands-on activity. They got to select a toy vehicle (i.e., target vocabulary) and create tracks using different variables. Students got to make tracks with paint, make tracks in shaving cream, make tracks in kinetic sand, etc. This allowed them to apply what they read (i.e., the dump truck and little blue truck's wheels got stuck in the mud), talk about it, work on fine-motor skills, compare/contrast, acted as a sensory outlet (e.g., shaving cream), and so forth. This activity was a big hit!
