On December 29, 1890, the Sioux Chief, Big Foot, along with 350 of his followers set up camp on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek. A shaman told them about the “Ghost Dance” which was believed to bring back their dead warriors, send the whites where they belonged, and bring back the Buffalo. The whites feared an uprising and surrendered their guns, it was only when a man who refused to give his gun up let out an accidental shot, then battle broke out which lasted for an hour. Lakota men, women, and children were targeted, and Chief Big Foot was found among the deceased.

This was a spiritual movement that arose among Western American Indians that began among the Paiute in 1889 with a series of visions from an elder, Wodziwob. His vision said the Ghost Dance would give the Indians a chance to revive themselves. The US government got scared and by 1890, the Ghost Dance was banned and the US War Department declared war. On December 15, Sitting Bull and 8 others were murdered.

On November 29, 1864 700 Colorado troops slaughtered over 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children at Sand Creek. This battle isn’t one that is well known because it was fought during the civil war, in hopes of gaining more territory. Soldiers scalped the dead and cut the ears off the chiefs.

The relationship between the native Americans and western expansion kept getting worse, and the native Americans were getting the worst of the damage. They were unsuccessful in protecting their lands, because the western explorers felt entitled to that land since it was bought. The efforts of the Indians were only short lived because troops murdered men, women, and children in any area around them
