Duchamp was a member of the Abbaye de Creteil group and in 1911-12 was exploring cubism and pushing beyond cubism's boundaries. This is not so much appropriation as it is an engagement with the subject of the nude, cubist technique, and proto-dadaesque satire of modernism.<br>The Shinn and Henri paintings are lovely and I commend your finding them. But they are not really "appropriating" the work of an earlier artist; it is more that they are 2nd or 3rd generation practitioners of a style. <br>Appropriation tends to be more obvious and more overt.
