"Adler and Widener score big -- their book reads like a labor of love." -- Publishers Weekly

"This is the kind of book that makes you want to buy season tickets." -- The Horn Book

* "This nastalgic, hearwarming story about hard work and teamwork highlights heroes big and small." -- Booklist (starred review)
From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-A moving story about how the famous Yankee unknowingly affects a young fan and his family. In the summer of 1932, a boy spots his father dressed in a suit and tie selling apples on the street, and he realizes that his dad, like so many other men, has lost his job. To help out their families, the youngster and a friend start selling newspapers outside Yankee Stadium, calling out the headlines from Babe Ruth's latest game. Their efforts earn some money, but the narrator is worried that his dad's feelings will be hurt if he finds out. Eventually, father and son come to a tender and silent understanding about their money-making activities. The tone brightens considerably when the boy sells a paper to the Babe himself and gets to see a real Yankee game, thanks to the slugger's generosity. Adler does a good job of balancing the personal relationship between father and son with a vivid portrait of the Depression and the positive impact of a true sports hero. Widener's stylized acrylic illustrations bring the city streets to life in an appealing way. The varied perspectives and exaggerated figures add excitement to the setting and the images and use of color perfectly reinforce the story's changing moods and emotions. A powerful picture book that's sure to be popular.
Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Shek marvels at the new world as he and his brother, Little Wong, arrive in California. Along with hundreds of other workers, the brothers are going to build a great railroad across the West. They plan to save enough money so that their mother and little brothers can join them in America. But as days grow into months, they endure many hardships-exhausting work, discrimination, and treacherous avalanches. Inspired by actual events, this story reveals the harsh truth about life for the Chinese railroad workers in 1865, while celebrating their perseverance and bravery.

Twelve-year-old Shipwreck narrates Fleischman's third novel (after By the Great Horn Spoon! and Bandit's Moon ) based on mid-19th-century California history. The boy earned his nickname after being fished from the sea by Captain Gallows, a Mexican sea bandit at the helm of The Giant Rat of Sumatra . The young Bostonian was one of two survivors from a whaling boat that splintered in a storm. Readers looking for a high-seas adventure may be somewhat let down by the fact that, despite the novel's title and cover art, Gallows's ship anchors after it enters San Diego Bay on the first pages; most of the subsequent action takes place on land. Yet plenty of intrigue, acts of revenge and droll dialogue will keep kids bountifully entertained. Gallows takes Shipwreck under his wing and sews into the hem of the lad's coat his most precious booty: the giant emeralds that once served as the eyes of his ship's bowsprit—a giant rat carved from mahogany. Shipwreck dutifully guards the gems as he sticks close to Gallows, who purchases a vast rancho, attempts to sabotage the business of the rancher who mistreated him in his youth and cagily deals with banditos who apprehend him. Adding dimension to the story, which entails some slapstick scenarios, is its historical backdrop—the Mexican-American War; during the course of the tale Mexico loses California to the United States. A boisterous, cleverly crafted caper. Ages 10-up.

A sequel to Coolies.
It’s the year after the big fire in Chinatown when Ming crosses the ocean to join his brothers in San Francisco. His oldest brother runs a store, rebuilt after the fire, but customers are few as many Chinese are working on the Transcontinental Railroad. His brother leaves him to manage the store, telling him not to leave Chinatown, but it’s lonely, so he jams his braid under his hat as a disguise and sets off to see the town. He meets a friend named Patrick who teaches him English and who finds the store fascinating. The friendship grows and, through Patrick’s loving family, the Irish community patronizes the store, and it flourishes. An idealized story with realistic pictures bathed in exaggerated orange light, readers will be fascinated by Soentpiet’s incredible details in the scenes from one street to another and inside the shop. A follow-up to Coolies (2001) by the same husband-and-wife author/illustrator team writing about an era that is seldom addressed for this age group. (author’s note, resource list) (Picture book. 6-9)
