What is a Lesson Plan?

A lesson plan is a guide used by a teacher to carry out a lesson. It often includes the goal, how it will be taught, and what students should take away from a lesson. They can be very detailed or more vague. This often depends on if the lesson is something that a teacher has taught for many years, in which case a detailed lesson plan would not be necessary. In contrast, if a first year teacher was leaving a lesson plan for a substitute teacher, a more detailed lesson plan would be beneficial.

A lesson plan is vital for teachers so that they know how to run the lesson before it starts and can focus on the learning of the student. It is also vital for classroom management, planning out a lesson will allow a teacher to plan their time accordingly so there is enough time to complete the activity, but not too much free time leftover. Lastly, they are vital for measuring students understanding as they describe what a student should get out of a lesson. These are just a few key reasons why lesson plans are important, there are many smaller components that lesson plans are important for as well.

A lesson plan has to have a learning objective, standards being met, learning activities, and an assessment to check student understanding. This is the bare minimum for a lesson plan. Many other things that are often required in a lesson plan depending on who you are writing it for. A more detailed lesson plan would be as follows.
- Grade level and subject
- Type of lesson
- Duration
- Standards being met
- Topic
- Objective
- Materials
- Directions
- Assessment

Lesson plans are shared all over. If you google lesson plan thousands of unique lessons will pop up in seconds. They can also be shared by word of mouth. If a teacher has a great lesson plan, they may share that lesson with another teacher in the future and allow them to use it their own classroom. I have attached an example of a way that a lesson plan is shared. I completed an assignment in a previous course in which I collected many lesson plans on various topics and grouped them into a slide show for future use. Now I am sharing them with you.

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to work with children. That evolved from pediatric nursing into elementary education. I love children and wish to make an impact upon their lives, I fell that a very effective way to do so is by becoming a teacher. That is why I have decided to join the teaching community.

A lesson plan can go wrong in a multitude of ways. Some examples would be poor execution of time management, incorrect material being taught or ineffective at meeting the proposed standard, or the lesson may simply just be uninteresting to your students. These are just a few ways that a lesson could go wrong, that is why it is so vital to always have a backup plan and be able to go with the flow.
