2. Fair Bear Share by Stuart Murphy: This book teaches students about adding with regrouping which requires place value skills. I used this book daily when I was a LTS in second grade and it really helped my students understand place value a little bit better.

Objective: Students will be able to use their place value understanding to make inferences about one and two digit numbers. 

Activity: I'm Thinking of a Number

Modeling: The teacher will think of a number and talk out loud so that students can observe and listen to his or her thought process. For example, the teacher would think of the number 45. He or she would explain the different ways of counting to 45 using rods and units and physically show it using base ten blocks (e.g. 4 rods and 5 units, or 2 rods and 25 units). The teacher could also describe numbers in relation to 45 (e.g. "If you add 10 to this number, you will reach 55." Or, "If you take away/subtract 7 ones, you will reach 38."). The teacher would model this using a hundreds chart. The teacher would model with two or three different numbers, demonstrating both of these methods to the students. 

Observational checklist:
1. Make sure students are utilizing both methods (i.e. base ten blocks and describing number relationships using the hundreds chart)
2. Make sure students can tell the difference between adding/subtracting ones and tens. 
3. Make sure students can build the numbers correctly using base ten blocks.
