The main characters of this story include Armand and Désirée, who are a married couple. Armand is an example of a dynamic character. At the beginning of the story, he is described as sweet, caring, totally in love with Désirée, and very attentive to his child. However, as the story continues, and it is apparent the child is not fully white, he becomes extremely distant and bitter. He shows his true colors and displays resentment towards both his child and his wife because he believes that they are not fully white. His character develops into a cruel and detached person. Désirée, on the other hand, is more of a static character. Her compassion and love for her child remain intact despite noticing that her child is not fully white. She remains equally affectionate and loving towards her family as she does at the beginning of the story, and does not change.

Symbol - The baby

Desiree's baby is the prominent symbol throughout the short story as she is the main source of conflict. After Desiree's baby was born, the question of the race of the baby and Desiree was brought into question. The possibility of being biracial , specifically the race that is seen as "cursed with the brand of slavery", caused the instant deterioration of the family. Desiree's baby becomes the symbol of the reality and consequences of racial identity, similarly to racism; bringing miscegenation, conflict between interracial marriages like the destruction of Desiree and Armand's marriage and family.

This title clearly represents the contents of the story. The story covers the conflict over something as innocent as Desiree's baby. The title emphasizes the root of the disagreement between Armand and Desiree being the controversy surrounding Desiree's baby, which is how the title relates to the rest of the story.

Gleeful
The beginning of the story holds a gleeful and overall cheery tone. Desiree states that she is in love and her family is very satisfied, as her mother visits. This section of the story is overall extremely positive and all characters are content with their lives.
Depressed and Grim
Further into the story, however, it develops a more gloomy and depressing tone as the family begins to fall apart. Armand blames and resents his wife, and turns on his family, leading his wife to leave their residence. This gave the story a more depressing and grim tone as the family's happiness slowly drained away.
Ironic
There are also aspects of irony shown in the tone of the story. The story leaves off by revealing that Armand is the one who is of mixed race, which he had accused his wife of being. This displays a sense of irony at the end of the story since the hypocrisy of Armand's actions is evident.
