Filipino media has a diverse library of movies, tv series, and even variety shows that anyone can watch. These shows can also demonstrate a lot of things in our culture too. Additionally, memes or viral reaction clips can come from these shows too.

Sports

Just like music we Filipinos are also very much into sports and it is a big part of our pop culture. Sports like: basketball, volleyball, football, and even cheerleading are well known in the Philippines through broadcasting of competitive events between known colleges or known regional/national teams.

OPM

Original Pilipino Music, or more commonly known as OPM has always stood out to me. The current artists like Juan Karlos, Lola Amour, Dilaw, Sunkissed Lola, etc. shape what the new generation of OPM is. This does not mean that the older songs are obsolete now because the artists and their music are timeless and will resonate to anyone no matter what their age is. OPM is not limited to ballad and love songs. It is a very diverse category of music and it shows the colorful artistry each Filipino artist can show to the world.

The Uses and Gratifications Theory is a way to understand why we choose to watch TV, listen to music, or use the internet. It says we're not passive, but active in picking what we like. People choose to consume media because they want something from it, like news, fun, or to feel connected with others. Everyone's a little different, so we pick different things to make us happy. This theory also says that media doesn't control us, which means we choose how to use it to meet our needs.

OPM, with UGT in mind shows us how we are affected by it by consuming OPM. We just need to keep in mind what OPM satisfies to fully understand it. OPM can make people feel emotions greater because they either relate to the lyrics or the music itself gives them a sense of emotion that wanted to feel or they are already feeling. This implies that OPM can be used in any occasion because of its diversity in genres. There's an OPM song out there for when you're feeling happy, sad, nostalgic, or more commonly, when you're in love.

This is why OPM is my Philippine Pop Culture feature in this padlet. Music is a very powerful thing and it transcends language. You don't have to be Filipino to understand and feel the emotions an OPM song is trying to convey because you can hear those emotions either in the artist's voice or in the melody of the song. Songs like Raining in Manila, Ere, Pasilyo, and more are popular right now and it is because all of these songs convey different emotions for different people who need something to relate to. It just goes to show that OPM can satisfy different needs and wants that each and every person consuming media has.
