One such theme is that life is precious and faith or hope should never be lost. We come across many hindrances in life and we must fight back with high spirits and courage. 

Another very important theme is sacrifice and selflessness, which Behrman potrays. Willing sacrificing anything for a person you love can have a huge impact. We must know that selflessness is an essential trait to being a good person, and understanding others.

The theme of the story revolves around two main values, Selfishness and the readiness to sacrifice. When Johnsy lost all hope and waited for the the last ivy leaf to fall, Behrman brought her back to life. Johnsy believed her life line was linked to an ivy plant and she thought she will when all the leaves of the plant has fallen. However Behrman paints a realistic leaf to convince Johnsy that the leaf had survived the bad weather. This instilled hope and confidence which cured her illness. Thus this story delivers multiple values that revolve around the themes of selflessness, sacrifice, compassion and generosity.

The theme of the story is that everyone's life is precious and valuable. We have to overcome obstacles with our hard work and determination instead of getting depressed and losing hope. It is our pessimistic attitude that keeps us from reaching our goals and that causes others grief. Another message is that we must be selfless just like doctor Behrman was. The main theme in the story “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry is hope, selflessness, sacrifice and love/respect for each other. There are several other minor themes that resurface from the text, and the most notable ones are the theme of hope and love/respect. Johnsy’s roommate Sue was a loving friend who didn’t want her friend to die. She served her, tried to console her from her hopelessness and did everything she could to save her. But despite the exceptional effort by Sue, johnsy wasnt recovering. it was thanks to mr. bherman who sacrificed his life by painting a leaf outside when the weather was harsh to save jhonsy and give her a hope of living.

The story also portrays the importance of hope and the value of ones life. Jhonsy easily lost hope after contracting a curable disease. Everyone around her desperately tried to ingite hope in her again, Dr. Behrman loosing his life in the process.
