Engagement with the required readings, and production of content online by the learners, is the building of community. In work, there are "Communities of Practice" - say, for example, biologists. This is not to imply homogeneity -- every individual has a unique reason or line of inquiry, and through the sharing of insights, constitutes the 'community', which informs the professional practice. Similarly, online learning establishes community through personal engagement with the material and each other. The instructor's job is to foster, facilitate, and feedback. --Patrick

I tend to think that a community (that is functional, trusting, accountable, etc.), online or otherwise, takes time. We are obviously limited with a university course, especially online. I think a cohort might resemble a community at the conclusion of the course more than at the beginning. That being said, I think it is important to set a respectful tone at the beginning and foster safe spaces for all students to engage the material and each other critically and positively. - Cliff

Given that this weeks theme is diversity, I think that one of the key principles in creating assignments to evaluate students is making sure that the assignments allow for choice. I remember taking a number of online courses where the assignment was flexible enough that I could apply it to activities I was doing in my work. This was the best learning I ever got! It became a 'real world' approach, rather than an academic exercise - John

quick and easy to do, yet gives them a hint of how they’re doing.
