response: Comfort objects are stuffed animals that represent actual animals. Each newchild is issued one comfort object and can keep it until the age of eight, when it is turned in to be recycled for use by another newborn.

response: After the Ceremony of Twelve, time is only spent with other people in training. There are no more volunteer hours nor reacreation hours. For the community, twelve is chosen as the age when people are ready to begin their life-long job.
-Who are the elders?
response: The elders of Jonas's community act like a city council or governing body. To maintain the effectiveness and execution of the policy of Sameness, they enforce the rules, determine job assignments, organize family units, host celebrations, declare holidays, and determine who lives and dies.

-Why is it rare to see mirrors in their community?
response: Mirrors were rare in The Giver because people did not see the need to have mirrors. People believed that using the mirror was similar to.
-Why do Birthmothers never get to see newchildren?
response: This is to prevent the birthmothers from forming a bond with the new children are experiencing any maternal feelings. Birthmothers are not viewed as parents.
-What causes the apple to change, when it is thrown?
response:  The apple changed from Jonas' point of view because he started seeing beyond, a quality that made him a candidate to be the new Receiver of Memory. 
-Why are light eyes rare in this community?
response: It is suggested that blue eyes are an indication of an aptitude for storing foreign memories. And only a handful of people can see beyond.

-Where do they go after they walk out of the releasing door?
response: Most of the members believe that the people that are released leave the community for another place. In reality, the people being released are injected with a lethal injection, and their bodies are thrown away.
-Why do the children have to bathe the elders?
response: Twelves are tasked with caring for the elderly of her society, with bathing them and helping make them as comfortable as possible just before they are "released."
-Why do only the old get to see the release of the elderly?
response: The old ones, at the House of the Old, are able to watch the ceremony, but they do not get to see the departure, as they believe the old ones are sent to another place.

-What does the pill do to someone?
response: According to community rules, Jonas must take a pill to stop “the stirrings,” or the onset of sexual desire during puberty.
-Why they have to share their dreams?
response: People have to report their dreams and share their feelings to make sure no one has any negative dreams or feelings and to stop them early if they do.
-How did Jonas report his stirring, just by telling his dream to his family?
response: Feelings like this are disallowed in the Community, so Jonas's mother lets him know that he did the right thing by reporting his dream, and he will begin taking the pills as a treatment.

response: Caleb died when he was four years old by falling into the river that runs near the community.
-Do they recycle names after someone dies, so that no one has the same name as anyone else?
response: They reuse the names as long as that person wasn’t “released” under painful circumstances.

response: At each Ceremony, children are granted new privileges, or responsibilities, seemingly related to their expected level of maturity.

What is the punishment for disciplining children in The Giver?
response: The punishment used for small children was a regulated system of smacks with the discipline wand: a thin, flexible weapon that stung painfully when it was wielded.
Why was Jonas skipped?
response: She skipped Jonas is because he had not been "assigned" an occupation but was "selected" as the community's next Receiver of Memory.
Why are Twelves so important, instead of any other age?
response: I think that the reason why the author chooses age 12 to be so important, is to reflex the target demographic, so that the audience feels more related to the main characters.

response: The Receiver is the sole keeper of the community's collective memory.
-Why are people more distant from Jonas after the ceremony?
response: Jonas immediately feels "separate, different." People move aside for him to pass, and his peers are unsure of how to act toward him. Even his best friend, Asher, appears uncomfortable in Jonas' presence.
-What is the "Capacity to see Beyond"?
response: The capacity to see beyond refers to the ability to carry the memories of others and see past the restrictions placed on their society.

Why is Jonas' folder so thin?
response: Jonas's folder is thin compared to those of others he has seen, and in it is only one sheet of rules. There are a total of eight rules on the sheet.
What does the medication do to the population? 
response:  Older children are given daily doses of medicine to prevent the stirrings or deep emotions that develop naturally in adolescence. And all pain is avoided.
Why is everyone treating Jonas differently?
response: They are most distant with him and don't know how to address him. He's been chosen as a special person in the community.

response: The community is all about social conformity: there are no secrets. Not locking doors means that everybody's life in open to scrutiny.
-Why are snow and sledding foreign to Jonas?
response: The reason they don't have snow anymore is because of climate control. Weather that wasn't conducive to growing crops was essentially eliminated
-Why does the Receiver already see Jonas as the Receiver?
response: Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory for his community when he turns twelve. He now receives the memories and the current receiver becomes the giver. And now he gives the Receiver the memories.

response: In order to achieve the “perfect” society, the Elders removed things like love, color, and choice. Except, those with pale eyes often develop the ability to see color and they perceive the world differently from those with dark eyes.

response: The discipline wand is a thin, flexible weapon that stings painfully when wielded. It is used mainly on small children starting when they take their first steps, but is used occasionally on the children younger than 8, it is also used on the old.

-How do they control the weather?
response: In The Giver, climate control refers to a series of technological advancements made in Jonas's society that creates a uniform weather pattern. There is no winter or snow in his world because of climate control, but the changes maximize the production of food.
-Are people that have pale eyes, the only people qualified to become a receiver?
response: Yes, those who have pale eyes are set apart and thought to be different. Jonas' eyes seem to indicate his superhuman ability to see beyond.

response: The pain lingers after the experience is over, because the Giver is not allowed to give him relief of pain, and Jonas limps home and goes to bed early.

Who the young boy that asked Jonas for water?
response: He is a dying boy who asks him for water, during his warfare memory.
What happened to Jonas' arm in the memory warfare?
response: One of his arms is badly broken, to the point that he thinks he can see the bone poking through

response: Warfare can be caused by frustration, fear and greed, because of past actions. But because they do not have memory it can not be caused.

Response: Jonas' community was strictly controlled and regulated. As long as the Elders have all the power, any celebration must conform to their control.

response: For them, the word love is too generalized a word, so meaningless that it's become almost obsolete.

response: His mother then tells him it is time for him to begin taking the pill daily as a treatment for the stirrings. Without the feelings, they could lead to pain or heartbreak, a risk for their perfect society.

response: Elsewhere encompasses all of the land outside of the community. The townspeople are not allowed to leave their community, only few can.

response: In The Giver, Elsewhere encompasses all of the land outside of the community. The townspeople are not allowed to leave their community, and few want to. After all, they are taught that Elsewhere is a dangerous place, without the safety and rules that protect people in their society.
Is Jonas hallucinating the singing?
response: Jonas feels love toward his family and friends, hears music for the first time, and feels “certainty and joy” as he believes himself to be going to a better Elsewhere. 
Is Jonas now creating his own memories, after stepping outside the community?
response: Upon first seeing the top of the hill, Jonas believes that he remembers the place, and it is “a memory of his own,” as opposed to one from the Giver. Because Jonas doesn't have his own memories of snow, the meaning of this sentence is not obvious. This confusion could signify Jonas's deterioration.
