This Colombian scientist is recognized worldwide for having discovered and patented the first vaccine against malaria (SPF66), an achievement that framed it in history, this in the global aspect, without taking into account that he contributed much more to Colombia by showing it as the architect of the bases of research in synthetic vaccines. The patent for this vaccine against malaria earned him $ 120 million of dollars that he donated to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 so that Pharmaceutical companies do not take advantage of the discovery in an economical way.

He also find the chemical principles that will allow the creation of vaccines to prevent practically all the infectious diseases existing in the world. It is a "decalogue of principles, of rules, that when they are applied they allow to produce vaccines against the 517 infectious diseases that exist”, that would prevent millions of deaths in the future, because only 15 diseases have a vaccine, reason why Patarroyo and his team tackle the problem from the point of view of chemistry, a milestone in science because the only existing ones were developed from biology.
