Synecdoche: Figure of speech which is used to represent a whole. Ex. "All hands on deck!" meaning all efforts ready Metonymy: Figure of speech which uses something related, to reference something. Ex. "The White House" meaning the president and their staff. Symbol: A mark or character used to represent a object, function, or process. Ex. "The symbol on the sign means slow down"

Synecdoche and Metonymy are parallel because the only difference Synecdoche has to reference something directly related to what it is referencing, such as the stripes on the American flag, while Metonymy, is more loosely related, with the White House example.

Both Synecdoche and Metonymy are heavily figurative, as they don't literally mean "all hands" on deck, instead meaning manpower
