Setting

The story "Island of Thieves" takes place mostly in Lima Peru and Isla de la Frontera . In the beginning it takes place in NYC for about 20 pages.
The setting plays an important role because it is kind of run down in some places. lots of gangs and both those things are very important to the story, because Tom and Uncle Harvey have a furious gang leader after them that's name is Otto.
They are looking for a Island that is said by Francis Drake to have 7 chests, 5 with gold and 2 with silver.
If the story didn't take place in Peru or Isla de la Frontera it wouldn't be as intriguing. For example when Tom and Uncle Harvey tried to get to the island it was terrifying here is the description from the book " We plunged down into troughs so deep that I thought we'd never make it up the other side. Then I'd look up and see an even bigger wave bearing down on us, tipped with frothing White spray. I would brace myself for the boat to brake apart."

Protagonist/ Characterization

The protagonist or main character is a 13 year old boy named Tom Trelawney. He is a pretty big trouble maker but is a really smart kid who never gives up. A prime example of this is throughout the whole story when they were searching for clues to find the island Tom was always the one to find the missing piece, solve the riddle, and figure out where they are, etc. An example from the book is when they're in the barn and he is looking at the wall paper and sees that the whole wall paper is actually pieces to a map.
Tom pushed himself to save his life and his uncle's life. He said at one point,

"Wait a minute, I told myself. Don't give up so easily." He knew he had to be clever and persevere to survive their adventure.
I learned that Tom worried a little bit about making it home alive as he often made comments that he hoped he would see his parents again. Even though he seemed to enjoy the adventure sometimes he knew he had to share only bits and pieces of the story to his parents.

So over all Tom makes for a very fun and interesting protagonist

Antagonist/ Conflict

The antagonist is a gang leader named Otto, and the conflict is if Tom and Uncle Harvey don't find the island and treasure Otto will kill them both. The reason that Otto is so mad is because Uncle Harvey sold Otto a fake famous painting for 100,000 k. So if Uncle Harvey never scammed Otto none of this would have happened.
This points out s second conflict one that Tom had to deal with. He had to decide whether to help his scheming uncle by putting himself in danger. He helped his uncle but realized there are 2 types of Trelawneys.
I think Tom is going to be a honest Trelawney after his dangerous experience with his dishonest Uncle Harvey. This supports my theme of the story .

Theme

The theme of this story is that people have choices determining if they want to be honest or dishonest people and what they need to be to stay alive. I think this because in the story the whole adventure and almost being killed is because of his dishonest Uncle. Tom realizes this and wants to be a honest person even thoe he was a trouble maker before . However, he also knows he has to survive by being clever and a little dishonest. "Wait a minute, I told myself. Don't give up so easily. Perhaps they haven't taken everything. Someone might have sneaked in here, grabbed an armful of loot, and then bolted. They might have left a few scraps...." In this example, Tom was trying to find a way to push himself to keep searching for the gold treasure so that he could save his and his Uncle's life.

When he was in jail he started to study and read a lot of books. Then he became a lawyer. So he decided to be a better person after he did the wrong thing.
This connects to the book because Tom made some mistakes in his life being a trouble maker and so did this guy in the story. Over time they both use their intelligence to do the right thing.

The story was written in a first person perspective. I know because in the book the story was being told in the eyes of Tom. One example of that is in the beginning of the book it said " I didn't mean to burn down the shed." Another example is throughout the story whenever Tom talked the sentence always started with "I" or had "I" in the sentence.
