In 1651, the English parliament passed a set of laws known as the Navigation Acts. The purpose of these laws were to control trade and make sure that England financially benefited from the colonies. The American colonies were only allowed to trade with England or English ships under these laws. Before they were sold to other countries, things like cotton, sugar, and tobacco had to be sold to England, where they were then sold to other places. The Navigation Act also ensured that the colonies only purchased goods from English businesses rather than foreign ones. So, any trade with other countries was banned even if it were more beneficial to the colonists. Although these laws increased England's wealth and power, it created many issues in the colonies. Since they wanted the freedom to trade with whoever gave them the best price, many colonists were mad, leading to some people smuggling goods secretly. Over time, this anger built tension between England and its colonies. This helped to fuel what is now known as the American Revolution.

In the 18th century, France was under a very corrupt monarchy. France was in major debt and the fear of starvation and uprisings were constantly looming over their heads. The lower class lead an uprising, and created the new government- The National Assembly. They found king Louis XVI guilty of treason and beheaded him. Although the National Assembly had a lot of support, there were still people that were opposed to the new form of government. To deal with this unrest, The Committee of Public Safety was created to quickly handle any threats of retaliation. Maximilien Robespierre was appointed to lead the Committee of Public Safety. His job was to lead the search of those disloyal to the assembly. Those found guilty would be sentenced to death by guillotine. They ended up sentencing around four hundred thousand people to death, with most not having a fair trial. This time period was known as the Reign of Terror. The National Assembly was replaced by The Directory who tried to mend what was previously broken in the country.

The Haitian Revolt was a slave uprising that took place in Haiti from 1791 to 1804. It was a slave rebellion that pushed French rule out and resulted with Haiti turning into a free country led by slaves. The slaves revolted because the French people ruling the colony enslaved Africans and forced them to work on sugar and coffee plantations under very harsh conditions. The enslaved African were sick of how they were being treated so they fought for their freedom. A man named Toussaint Louverture was the leader and he organized the slaves and led them into battle. He was smart and skilled in both war and politics. Throughout the war, the rebels fought against French, Spanish, and British armies. When Louverture was captured by the French, a new leader named Jean-Jacques Dessalines continued the fight. In 1804, the revolt ended with a major victory. Haiti became the first independent Black republic in the world and ended slavery in their land. The Haitian Revolution inspired other people fighting for freedom, but it also scared slave owners in other countries. This revolt proved that enslaved people could fight back and win their freedom.

The First Continental Congress was a meeting of leaders from 12 of the 13 colonies. It took place in Philadelphia in 1774. The colonies had been putting up with a lot of discrimination and unfairness from the British Parliament. The colonies were angry because Britain had passed new laws like the Intolerable Acts to punish them for the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable acts took away some of the colonies basic rights and made life harder for the citizens. 12 of the 13 colonies sent representatives to talk about how they could work together to fight for their liberties. They did not want war with Britain yet, but they wanted to stand up for their rights. The Congress sent a letter to King George III, asking him to revoke the laws, and give the colonies representation in Britain's Parliament. They also stated in the letter that they would boycott all British goods until they agreed to the terms. The First Continental Congress was important because it was the first time the colonies worked together to fight for their liberties. It helped build unity and trust between the colonies. The First Continental Congress was not a full success but it was a big step toward independence and the American Revolution.

Otto von Bismarck was an important leader in the 1800s who helped unite Germany into one strong country. He was the Prime Minister of Prussia and later became the first Chancellor of Germany. Bismarck was smart and knew how to use both war and peace to reach his goals. He was known for his belief in leading a country with "Blood and Iron" rather that votes and speeches. He led Prussia into war against countries like Denmark, Austria, and France and used the victories to bring many of the German states together. In 1871, Germany became a united empire with Bismarck in charge. He believed in “realpolitik,” which means making decisions based on what works best, not just on beliefs or ideals. After uniting Germany, Bismarck worked hard to keep peace in Europe by making smart alliances. He also passed laws to help workers, like health and accident insurance, to stop people from joining socialist groups. Even though he was forced to leave office in 1890, his ideas and actions shaped Germany for many years. Bismarck was a strong and smart leader who changed history by building a powerful country.

The Enclosure Acts were a series of laws passed in England between the 1600s and 1800s that changed the way land was used. Before these laws were passed, many farmers shared big fields and used public land to let their animals graze and grow food. The Enclosure Act allowed landowners to fence off, or “enclose,” the shared lands and turn them into private property. It made farming more organized and efficient by helping to grow more food. However, it also caused problems. Most of the small farmers lost their land and couldn't support themselves anymore, because the bigger farmers claimed the land. They were forced to move to larger towns and cities to find work, which really contributed to the Industrial Revolution. These farmers had to find work to help support their families, so the worked in big factories and industries. While the Enclosure Acts helped improve farming for rich landowners, they made life harder for poor farmers. Overall, the Enclosure Acts were a major contributing factor of the Industrial Revolution and helped to Modernize Britain despite the suffering it brought to the lower class

The Mayflower Compact was a document made and signed by the Pilgrims in 1620. When they landed, they needed a way to keep order and work together so the Mayflower compact was what they based their government on. Before leaving their ship, the Mayflower, the men on board wrote and signed the Mayflower Compact. It was a document that said they would make fair laws and follow them for the good of the whole colony. This was one of the first steps toward self-government in America, because it introduced the idea of a democratic republic. The Compact showed that the people agreed to govern themselves instead of being ruled by a king or someone across an ocean. Those who signed it promised to work together and obey the laws they created. The Mayflower Compact helped the Pilgrims build a strong and united community. Even though it was short and basic, it became an important symbol of democracy and the idea that people can make their own government. It was one of the first examples of people in the New World creating rules for themselves.

James Hargreaves was an important inventor during the Industrial Revolution. In the 1760s, he created a machine called the Spinning Jenny, which changed the way cloth was made. Before this invention, people spun thread by hand using a spinning wheel, which was slow and could only make one thread at a time. Hargreaves’ Spinning Jenny could spin several threads at once, which made the process much faster, advancing the textile industry. This helped factories produce more cloth quickly and cheaply. It also meant that factories needed fewer workers work the machines, so many people got replaced by these machines and were forced to to find other jobs to support their families. Even though it caused problems for some workers, the Spinning Jenny was a big step forward for the textile industry. It helped make clothes and fabric more available and cheap to more people. James Hargreaves’ invention played a major role in the growth of factories and cities during the Industrial Revolution. His work helped shape the modern world by making production faster and more efficient.

Charles Darwin is a famous scientist who completely changed the way people understood nature. In 1859, he wrote a book called On the Origin of Species. In the book, Darwin talked about his idea of evolution. He said that all living things change slowly over time, to help them adapt to their environments. He also introduced the idea of natural selection. Natural Selection is when animals and plants with the best traits for survival are more likely to live and have babies. These good traits get passed on and over many generations, it leads to changes in a species. Darwin’s ideas were new to many people at the time, especially because it challenged the belief that all life was created exactly as it is now. His book caused a lot of debate and faced a lot of opposition, but it became one of the most important scientific books ever written. Darwin’s theory helped people understand how animals, plants, and even humans evolved to be and look like what they do today. On the Origin of Species is still important today and is the foundation for modern biology and the study of evolution.

The Articles of Confederation was the first plan for the government of the United States. It was written during the American Revolution and was approved in 1781. The goal was to bring all of the 13 states together while still letting each state keep most of its power. Under the Articles, there was no president or national court system. Congress would be able to make laws, but it couldn’t collect taxes or force states to follow the rules. This made the national government very weak. It was hard to solve problems like paying war debts or settling disputes between states, when there wasn't a specific person or group finalizing most decisions. Many people soon realized that the Articles didn’t work well. In 1787, leaders of the states met to create a new plan and system, and came up with the U.S. Constitution. Even though the Articles of Confederation failed, they were an important first step in forming a united country. They showed Americans that they needed a stronger national government to keep the country together and deal with big issues. The experience helped shape the government we have today.

It was published in 1859 and takes place during the French Revolution and is set in London and Paris. It shows how life was very different for rich and poor people at that time. The book begins with the famous line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” displaying how the world was full of both hope and danger. A Tale of Two Cities explores themes like justice, sacrifice, and the power of love. One of the main messages of the book is that people can change and that even in dark times, there is hope. The novel also warns people about what can happen when people are treated unfairly for a long period of time. A Tale of Two Cities is still popular today because of its powerful story and important lessons about history, humanity, and standing up for what is right.

Adam Smith was a Philosopher from Scotland who wrote a book called The Wealth of Nations in 1776. It was one of the first books to explain how money and businesses work. Smith said that people should be free to make and sell things without too much control from the government. He believed that when people try to earn money for themselves, they also end up helping the whole country. This idea is called the “invisible hand.” Smith also explained how prices are decided by supply and demand how much people want something and how available the item is. He said that when businesses compete, it helps keep prices fair and makes better products. Smith also talked about how dividing work into smaller steps makes things faster and cheaper to make. The Wealth of Nations became a very important book. It helped people understand how to grow a strong economy and is still used today. Adam Smith’s ideas are a major factor of capitalism, the economic systems used in many countries.

The Napoleonic Code was a set of laws created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804. It was meant to make the laws in France clear and fair for everyone. The Napoleonic Code said that all men were equal under the law and that people should be judged by the same rules. It protected property, supported religious freedom, and ended special rights for nobles. However, it also gave more power to men and took away many rights from women. The Code was strict but helped bring order and justice to France after years of chaos. It became a model for laws in many other countries around the world. Even though Napoleon contributed some good things to the world, he is now known as one of the many corrupt leaders of his time. Napoleon let the power get to his head and overthrew those who appointed him, and he wanted to make a big empire for himself.

The Congress of Vienna was a major meeting held from 1814 to 1815 after Napoleon was defeated. Leaders from the most powerful European countries, like Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Britain, met to rebuild Europe to its "former glory" and prevent future wars. Their main goal was to create a balance of power so that no one country could dominate Europe again like France had Napoleon ruled. They also wanted to restore old monarchies and return land to its previous owners. Prince Metternich of Austria played a big role in leading the discussions. The Congress redrew the map of Europe and set rules for how countries should work together to keep peace. While the decisions mostly helped the rich and powerful, didn't listen to those who wanted democracy and national independence, the Congress succeeded in keeping Europe pretty peaceful for almost a century. The Congress of Vienna shaped the political future of Europe and set the stage for how countries would handle major conflicts for years to come.

The Treaty of Paris of 1783 was the document that officially ended the American Revolutionary War. It was signed by representatives from the United States and Great Britain. The treaty recognized the United States as an independent country that was now free from British rule. It also set the borders of the new nation, giving the U.S. the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River. Britain agreed to leave all its forts in American territory, and both sides promised to pay any debts they owed each other. The treaty also said that American Loyalists and people who had supported Britain during the war should be treated fairly. The Treaty of Paris was a big moment in history because it marked the beginning of the United States as its own country. It showed that the colonies had won their freedom and could now govern themselves. It caused a domino effect and lead to many other areas of the world fight for their independence. It was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783, and brought peace after years of fighting and set the foundation for the future of the United States.

Before the 19th century, most Europeans were unaware about the interior of Africa. The only information they had about Africa was because of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, when European traders went to Africa with goods in exchange for African slaves. The European traders rarely left the ships when in Africa in fear of catching deadly diseases. The land between the Senegal River and Angola was named "The white man's grave" due to this. Any engagement with Africa was only for trade rather than exploration. It wasn't until the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in 1807 that Europeans began to began to deeper explore the continent. Mungo Park and David Livingstone started to map the area and Europeans focused on Africa's natural resources. In 1870, only 10% of Africa was under the control of European nations. But when the king of Belgium, King Leopold, gained a lot of land in Africa, he made it a sight of brutal exploition, forced labor, mistreatement, and disease. This land, controlled by King Leopold, was referred to as the "Congo free state" where millions of Africans died. This led to many European powers rushing to claim territories in Africa. This period was known as the "Scramble for Africa". It led to Otto von Bismarck creating the Berlin Conference where European nations met in a peaceful manner to divide up Africa. No African representation was involved in this, and the meeting was based off European interests instead of African needs. The conference brought both positive and negative outcomes. It promoted ideas such as free trade, the elimination of slavery, and respect for territorial claims, but it completely disregarded African land rights. This harsh colonization time in the 19th century was caused by the want for economic gain and the desire for higher status. This marked the beginning of the lasting Imperial control over Africa.

In the early 1600's, India was under the rule of a Muslim group called the Mughals. While they lead the country, the majority of India consisted of the Hindus. The conflicting beliefs between the rulers and the citizens created a lot of conflict like high taxes and forced religious idealogies within India. The conflict made it very easy for the Europeans (British) to take over India as their next imperial target. The British East India Company continued their extension across India. Some of the ways they did this was by building trading posts along Indias coast, and set up eir own army to support the local Indian rulers. Locals viewed this as the British trying to change and wash out their culture. This lead to the Sepoys, or more commonly known as Indian soldiers to revolt against the British troops. The British east India company was able to suppress the rebellion and untimely beat the Sepoys.

The assasination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the result of a lot of building tension between Balkan countries and Serbia/ Bosnias want to separate from the Austrian-Hungary empire. Many assassination attempts were made before the lethal shot was taken by Gavrilo Princip. The assassin shot and killed both the Archduke, and his wife, Sophia. He was a member of a nationalist group who called themselves the Black Hand. This event is so important because it is what truly caused World War One to start. On July 28th 1914, Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia. The declaration of war quickly spread throughout Europe because of the previously made alliances. Germany and Italy supported Austria- Hungary, while France, Britain, and Russia supported Serbia and the other Balkan countries. This conflict quickly escalated to a full scale war, involving many countries and marked the beginning of World War One It really shows how fragile alliances and how one situation can lead to a major life changing event.

The First Sino-Japanese Partook place between 1894 and 1895. I t was a major conflict between the Qing Dynasty in China, and Japan, over the control and influence in Korea. At the time, Korea was kind of controlled by China, but Japan wanted to expand its influence and challenge China's long standing control. The war began after unrest in Korea pushed both nations to send military troops. China had a very unorganized had a very unorganized and outdated military. Japan had really mordernized their military and economy during the Meiji Restoration, so they were able to beat China. The whole world was shocked by their win, and China was left humiliated. The treaty of Shimonoseki ended the war in 1895. It made China recognize Koreas independence, and give up Taiwan and the Liaodong Peninsula to Japan. This war (and loss for China) played a major role in the decline of the Quing dynasty, and it was a big shift in Eastern Asia influence, and was a turning point in Japan's rise to power. it also lead to unrest in China and contributed to the later reformation and revolutions.

The Treaty of Versailles was the treaty that brought World War One to an end. It was initially drawn up to conclude the war and split up the land gained by the Triple Entente from winning the war. It was meant to be to by fair, and avoid any additional conflict from starting. It stated that Germany must pay reparations to any countries they financially harmed during the war. It also said that they had to demilitarize or disarm their military so they only have a big enough army to protect themselves, lose territory, and give up any over sea colonies. It also created the League of Nations, which was a worldwide organization made for the purpose of maintaining peace in the world. Later in time, the Treaty of Versailles would be a major contributing factor to the start of World War 2. It left Germany feeling frustrated and humiliated, which let Hitlers and his ways take over Germany.

The telegram was supposed to just stay between Germany and Mexico, but the was able to get they hands on it and and decode it. The German foreign minister, Arthur Zimmerman sent the message to Mexico asking if they would want to join teams and become allies. Germany promised them to help Mexico regain their lost territories like Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, if they waged war against the United States. Britain intercepted this message and made it public after giving it to the US. Americans were very mad about this and caused those hesitant to joining the War want to join it. The fact that Germany was trying to wage war against the US really angered people. Germany was also constantly sending submerse and taunting America. This telegram however, was the final straw, and caused the US to declare war on Germany in 1917. This marked a major part of the war because the Allies gained another ally by America joining the war.

A group who called themselves the "Boxers" were mad with all the foreign influence presence in their country. They were followers of the original Qing Dynasty who wanted to stay with their traditional ways. They wanted all foreigners and missionaries, who wanted to help modernize China out of their land. But the Boxers also didn't like their current government because they thought they were weak for letting foreigners in in the first place. The rebellion started with attacks on foreigners and Christians, but spread quickly. They fought with their mane goal being to rid China of foreign influence, and restore it to how it was before the Industrial Revolution and imperialism. When the Boxers surrounded the foreign areas of Bejing, European countries like Britian, Germany, the US, and Japan came together to stop the rebellion. They defeated the boxers and made China allow more forign control, which has a lasting impact on both the Chinese economy and people.

The Bolshevik Revolution, or also known as the October Revolution happened in 1917 in Russia. It was a major turning point in World History, that happened after Russia pulled out of World War One. Russia was having some big economic struggles, food shortages, and debts from the war. Many Russian citizens were getting angry with the government, and started losing faith in their monarchies ability to rule. Vladmir Lenin was the head of the Bolshevik party. The Bolshevik Party were socialists who fought to overthrow Russia's monarchy to gain control for themselves. When they claimed power, Lenin promised "peace, land, and bread" to the citizens of Russia. They began reinventing Russia, to adapt to the new world, and turned it into a communist country. The three promised things kind of failed, because with a dictator, individuals in a country don't have a say or voice. The revolution was the beginning of the Soviet Union, and it inspired other countries to become communist. It changed Russia forever, and had a lasting impact on politics.

During World War One, the treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed. This peace agreement between Russia, Germany, and other central powers was signed on March 3, 1918. One of the things the Bolsheviks promised when they took control of Russia was to get out of the war. Russia was in scrambles. People were starving, tired, and the economy was falling apart. To pull out of World War One, Russia was forced to give back some of their land in Ukraine, Poland, and Baltic states. It was a big loss of land and people for Russia, but at that point, they would do anything to get out of the war. Without worrying and focusing on the World War, Bolshevik leaders like Lenin were able to give their full attention on civil wars within Russia, and rebuilding the country, both literally and economically. When the Russians signed the treaty it also helped the Germans. They no longer had to have troops fighting on the Russian border. Still, Germany would lose the war later in 1918. After the war the treaty was canceled.

Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points were a set of recommendations for a more peaceful world after World War One. President Wilson spoke about them in an address to the U.S. Congress in January 1918. He hoped the war could end so that there would not be any further wars. The 14 Points spoke of justice, openness, and cooperation among nations. Some of the key ideas were the end of secret treaties, allowing countries to trade freely, demilitarizing the military, and giving people the right to rule themselves. One of the most important idea was the creating of a League of Nations, which was a group of nations that would work together and assist with resolving problems and avoiding war. Wilson's ideas were idealistic and aimed at making the world safer and more just. Nevertheless, not all of the Allied leaders agreed with him. Many of his points were not included in the Treaty of Versailles, though the League of Nations was created. Wilson's 14 Points still influenced the manner in which individuals thought about peace and diplomacy in the years to come.

The Sykes-Picot agreement was an agreement between the Allies about how to split up the Ottoman Empire after their fall. At the time, the Allies were winning and they wanted to discuss how all the land would be split up. The land the Ottomans were occupying was very valuable, baucasue it had a lot of natural resources and it was a good location. France was planned to take Syria and Lebanon, and Britain was going to get Iraq, Palestine, and Jordan. When the deal was made, the allies talked to Arab leaders and told them that if they help them fight the Ottomans they will help them get independence. However the treaty of Sykes Picot later fell into use and became public, the Arabs felt betrayed, because they didn't get what was promised. The Arabs also felt no loyalty or respect for the new imperialized and modernized European countries. The agreement caused lasting tensions and helped to make the Middle East borders we have today.

When they fought for it, the US supported them, which angered Spain. In addition to their support America wanted to fight because they believed Spain blew their military ship, named the U.S.S. Maine on the coast of Cuba. The United States declared war on Spain, and fought the war mostly in Cuba and some in the Philippines (Which were Spains largest colonies). Soon, the U.S. won the war and showed the world how their military had grown. Since they lost, Spain had to give up control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. This was a major turning point is Spains history, because the lost had cost them so much that they weren't one of the major global powers anymore. On the other hand, the U.S. became a known and recognized global power after the war. The war had only lasted for a couple months, but it still had a lasting impact of the world.

It marked a major turning point in World War One, and is possibly the reason why the Alliance was able to win the war. When the war started, the U.S. wasn't directly involved in it. However, throughout the war, many factors contributed to the U.S joining the Allies. For starters, they had more financial and economic ties to the Allies, rather than the Central Powers. They also believed that an ally would strengthen their democracy and help to maintain a balance of power in the world. Other factors like the Zimmerman telegram pushed America into joining the war, but the sinking of the Lusitania was the final straw. the Lusitania was a passenger ship that was meant to take people from North America to Britain. When the ship reached the coast of Ireland, German submarines and ships bombed and sunk the boat. They justified this by saying that they were to bomb and sink any ship that was chaptered for Britain. The U.S. saw this as an act of war against themselves, and a little while later, President Woodrow Wilson declared war on the Central Powers.

In 1912 and 1913, two wars broke out in the Balkan area. The main cause for the Balkan wars was to gain land from the Ottoman Empire. For the first war, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, and Bulgaria joined forces to become the Balkan league. Together, the were about to quickly defeat the Ottoman Empire and gain a lot of their land for themselves. But with all the new land, they had to agree how to divide it up equally between themselves. The second Balkan war occurred when Bulgaria was frustrated with their share of land, and declared war on its former allies. Bulgaria was fighting against multiple countries, so when Serbia, Montenegro, and Greece teamed up again, they were quick to defeat Bulgaria. The treaty of Bucharest ended the second Balkan war, but there was still tension between the countries. These wars changed European landscape, and Serbia's rise to power alarmed Austria-Hungary, and caused more tension between the two, that would eventually lead to the start of World War 1.

In October 1911 a military revolt took place in Wuchang China, but it quickly spread throughout the country. The Chinese citizens were very unhappy with the Qing Dynasty which seemed weak and corrupt. Their dissatisfacation with the dynasty is what initially lead the uprisings. The Chinese people wanted a modernized country and independence. One of the leaders of the revolution was named Sun Yat-sen. He pushed ideas of nationalism, democracy, and independence. Puyi was the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and in 1912 he renounced his throne and Sun Hat-sen was made the temporary president. Even though the revolution ended imperial rule, China didn't become immediately stable. Still, the 1911 revolution was a major turning point in Chinese history. It began the shift from a monarchy to a republic, and it inspired a lot of future positive changes.

With Britain being an Island, it was a given that they would have a great navy. So, when Germany tried to raid Britain by ship, they were quickly defeated or forced to surrender, and they realized that if they wanted to win, they would have to come up with a better strategy. Their next approach was by air. They decided that the best strategy would be to continuously bomb cities in England until they surrender. This also failed because the prime minister, Winston Churchill refused to give up and surrender their land to Germany. Many lives were lost because of the bomb raids, but Britain held strong until Germany eventually gave up and retreated. This was a very significant part of World War Two because it was the first time that Germany "lost" a battle they started.

After World World Two, the Allies had a meeting, and decided how to split Germany and Berlin up between themselves. Even the soviet controlled East Germany was divided. So in response, in June 1948, the Soviet union blocked all land, and railroad access to get into West Berlin. The purpose of this was to drive the Allies that were occupying West Berlin. In response, the U.S. and other allied organized a way to get supplies to the allies living in Berlin called the Berlin Airlift. Every few minutes an ally plane would land inside Berlin with resources and supplies like food, fuel, etc. Over about a year they delivered over 2 million tons of supplies. The purpose was to help the allies in Berlin without starting a war with Russia. Eventually in 1949 the Soviets gave up and lifted the blockade. The airlift was a success and completed its purpose, but also caused more tension between the Allies and the Soviets.

In the streets of Germany, any shops or stores owned by Jews was raided and absolutely destroyed. Not only that but any Jew walking freely in the streets were attacked, and had no help from local law enforcement. This night fueled and started so much antisemitism and hate towards. It didn't just ignore antisemitism, but it fully promoted the idea. It created so much hate towards the Jews. It also started the whole final solution. After this night, Jews were sent to Ghettos and packed in train cars where they most would face they imminent death. There were many concentration camps throughout Europe, but Auschitz is one of the more "famous" ones. they murdered jews by poison gas, starvation, overwork, medical experiments and so many other disgusting methods.

The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and seven other Eastern European countries during the Cold War. It was created as a type of response to NATO, a Western military alliance. The countries included in the Warsaw Pact were the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania (which later left). The pact's purpose was to strengthen military cooperation and defend against any attacks from countries affiliated with NATO. It also gave the Soviet Union control over the armed forces of its allies, which helped to maintain its influence in Eastern Europe. The Warsaw Pact played a key role in the Cold War by really emphasizing the division and difference between East and West Europe. The Warsaw Pact lasted until 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed and the other countries affiliated with it moved away from communist rule.

The Partition of India occurred in 1947, when British India was split into two new countries. these two new countries are what is now known as India and Pakistan. This was due to the fact that Hindus and Muslims often disagreeing and fighting over the government of the nation. The majority of Muslims, who were led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the All-India Muslim League, felt like they wouldn't be treated fairly in a Hindu ruled India. They wanted to have their own country where they would be safe and their rights protected. Hindus however, really wanted the country to remain unified. In order not to have another fight, the British opted to divide the land before leaving. India became largely Hindu, and Pakistan was created for Muslims. It was not very organized, and millions people wanted to pack up and move to the nation that was most compatible with their religion. Families were torn apart, and violence broke, killing hundreds of thousands. It was a painful and traumatic experience, but it also witnessed the dawn of freedom in both nations.

Before World War Two ended Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met in Tehran at the Tehran conference to discuss what would happen after the war ended. When they met, the war wasn't fully over yet, but Germany was slowly falling and the Allies were advancing. At the conference they talked about how they would divide Germany up after they lost. We know that this lead to some conflicts of its own, but it was overall helpful. At the conference Stalin agreed to help the U.S. fight and defeat Japan. Although Germany war falling, at this point in the war Japan was still fighting strong. Russia was also closer to Japan so their assistance was very helpful. Lastly, they created the UN. They basically took everything that was wrong with the League of Nations (which failed), and made it better for the UN. It was to maintain peace in the world and avoid another world war. The UN is still strong today with 193 independent states a part of it.

The Korean War was a war that took place between 1950 and 1953 on the Korean Peninsula. After World War II ended, Korea was divided into two parts. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union and China (the communists), and South Korea, backed by the United States and other Western nations (Democracies). In June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, with the hope to unite the country under a communist government. The United Nations, led by the U.S. responded by sending troops to South Korea to help them fight the war. The U.N. wanted to help because they wanted to try to stop another country from becoming communist. The death toll for the Korean War was very high, and the front lines settled near where the war began. In 1953, an armistice was signed, but no peace treaty, meaning the war technically never ended, because it was more of a stalemate. The Korean War was important in the early Cold War because it showed the global struggle between communism and democracy. It also left Korea divided, which is still a thing today.

During Word War 2, the Allies created a 3 step plan for how they would gain control of the war and eventually win. Overall their plan was to surround German occupied lands and slowly fight their way inward. Britain was known for having a very good Navy which would help them cross the English Channel and then fight on land. Their main goal was to weaken Germany from all sides. Their second step was to go from the English Channel, and push inland to France, and claim that land back. D-Day was this first initial attack on France, and it marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe from Nazi control. It was an essential day because its how the Allies began to get the upper hand in the war and stop the spread and invasion of Nazis. After their win in Normandy, France, they had a strong Western front and they would continue to push inward and gain more territory back.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed by the U.S. Congress in August 1964 in response to a supposed North Vietnamese attack on American naval vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin. The nature of the attack was unclear and ultimately disputed, but it was employed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to ask Congress for the power to react. The resolution gave him broad authority to use military power in Vietnam without a congressional declaration of war. As a result, American involvement in the Vietnam War quickly escalated with additional troops and equipment being deployed to support South Vietnam against North Vietnam's communist army. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution changed the character of the war and greatly expanded presidential war powers. It was later criticized as granting the president too much uncontrolled power and as being based on hypothetical occurrences. In 1973, Congress passed the War Powers Act in order to limit such powers in the future.

After the Great Depression, some countries decided to become Communist or Totalitarian. Some of these countries were Germany, who was lead by Adolf Hitler, Italy, who was run by Benito Mussolini, and Russia, where Stalin took over after Lenin. In Germany, Hitler was making a plan to invade European countries to gain land and create a great German empire. He wanted the support and alliance of Russia, so he met with Stalin in August 1939 and they signed a nonaggression pact. This meant that they were both basically agreeing to not attack each other and become allies. Two days later, Germany attacked Poland and Britain and France declared war. Later in the war, after Germany's failed attempt to invade Britain they turned their backs on Russia. Germany stabbed Russia in the back when they attacked them. This was a major turning point in the war. Germany and Russia's non aggression pact was over and Russia joined the Alliance. This completely changed the war because Russias strength really helped the Allies win the war.

The Chinese Civil War was a war between the Communists and the Nationalists (Kuomintang). It is regarded as having occurred from the late 1920s until 1949, with the exception of the break that occurred during World War II. The Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-shek, were involving in creating a strong central government. The Communists, led by Mao Zedong, were building a society based on equality, as well as protection of the peasants and working class. After World War II, fighting broke out again, and the Communists acquired the support of the peasantry. The Chinese Communist Party defeated the Nationalists, who fled to the island of Taiwan, through guerrilla warfare and strong leadership. In 1949, Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The war resulted in the schism between China and Taiwan which persists today. The Communist victory also represented a major watch the balance of power shifted during the Cold War, as China became a huge communist state.

In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first Black president and the last president of the apartheid era, which was a formal system of racial discrimination and segregation. This is a historic presidency, it is apartheid's first democratic election (where all constituency races were allowed to vote). As president, he was also the president of the African National Congress (ANC), which he led after spending 27 years in prison. Fellow South Africans awaited his leadership to unify a country that was divided, repair wounds, design peace, and build a new democratic nation. He promoted forgiveness and reconciliation, and brought former enemies together to form a "Rainbow Nation" of equality as South Africans. He oversaw the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to address previous issues of human rights violations as the ANC was elected and mobilized. Although he faced major challenges of poverty and inequality during his presidency, Mandela is a symbol of justice, freedom, and peace globally, exemplified by his refusal to run for a second term, and fast-tracking the completion of his presidency in 1999, which he considered showing no personal interest in leadership, but being committed to showing leadership by example and democracy.

The Battle of the Bulge was one of the biggest and deadliest battles American Soldiers took part in throughout World War II, but it ended well for the Allies. This battle took place in late fall of 1944 until early spring of 1945, in the forests of Belgium and Luxembourg. Germany planned to execute a surprise attack in order to try to split the Allied forces and take control of the war back. The Germans successfully infiltrated the American lines and created a "bulge" in the front lines, which is how the battle got its name. At first, the Allies were surprised by the attack and many American soldiers were trapped, without food, cold, and had little supplies. They held out, especially in the town of Bastogne, where American troops fought bravely. After weeks of fighting in freezing conditions, the Allies pushed the Germans back and won the battle. The battle of the Bulge was the last major German counterattack in the war, and aided in the eventual decline of Nazi Germany. This battle was also very important in the timeline of the war becasue it was the last offensive attack from the Germans of the war. After this loss for them they were forced to go on the defensive side of things.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day conflict during the Cold War between the United States, Cuba and the Soviet Union that happened in October of 1962. It began when U.S. officials discovered that the Soviets had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba secretly, only 90 miles away from the Florida. John F. Kennedy, the President at the time, imposed a naval blockade to prevent any other missiles from reaching Cuba. For two weeks, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. tensions rose and they got closer to nuclear war. Following tense negotiations, Nikita Khrushchevagreed to withdraw the missiles in Cuba in exchange for the U.S. to agree to not invade Cuba and a secret agreement by the U.S. to withdraw missiles from Turkey. While this crisis presented an extremely dangerous situation, it ended in peaceful resolutions, but did position the the world very close to nuclear disaster. In the end, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. focused on ways to improve communications to avoid these kinds of conflicts in the future. They made a direct line between Washington and Moscow, added nuclear arms control agreements, and agreed to engage in future arms agreements in general.

Throughout world history, you will see many cases where countries are competing to invent or create something first. This was the case during the Second World War. In 1945 when Harry S. Truman was president of the United States, he pushed the US to focus on trying to invent the first atomic bomb. It was known that whichever country was the first to create this fatal bomb, would have the upper hand and most likely win the war. A top secret project called the Manhattan Project was started to try to be the first to create the atomic bomb. Once America invented it, they used it to win the war against Japan. They dropped 2 bombs on the small Japanese islands named Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. These bombs obliterated the islands but were senates a warning to Japan. America was threatening to drop the bombs on Japans main Island if they didn't surrender. After the second bomb was dropped, Japan finally surrendered which marked the end of World War Two. The Manhattan project was a major turning point in the war, and brought the conflict to a close.
