    After watching THE GOOP LAB - episode 3, the idea of women feeling insecure in their bodies as they feel they dont meet the high social conventions of the perfect women, was bought to my attention.

    There are unrealistic stereotypes and ‘honest’ images of the female body do not exist. The programme explored how men have taken images of women for centuries and as soon as the camera is given to the women, it becomes vein.

    This highlights a key point from a wednesday lecture about women in design history. It taught me it is important for women to be in charge of their sensuality, body and opinions like men and not disassociate it from our bodies. 

    Women are meant to be perfect- we are told what to think, say, act, dress and look etc, and this is highlighted in the very inspiring video Be a Lady They Said by Girls Girls Girls Magazine. 

    I want to depict the reality of the female body which I am experiencing for than ever in isolation, being at one with my natural self. I want to use the skills I learnt during the project to portray intense intimacy, honest, personal liberation and the beauty of imperfection of the woman form through style of photography as well as the narrative.

    Matthew Wilkinson is a British artist based in LA who thinks there is more to it than music, drugs and dumb nostalgia. He tells me: “I think the symbolism and iconography of rave in art is a great simple example of freedom. It’s was one of the last cultural movements before everything started eating itself and falling in on itself and becoming a postmodern rehash of something else.”

If you ever do meet someone who doesn’t listen to music that would be very odd and unusual, so it’s something that touches everybody.” Universalism and inclusivity is something that’s often lacking in contemporary art, but is the ethos the rave scene was built on. The inclusive nature of music and its ability to instantly relay a message has a satisfaction to it that the painstaking, analytical interpretation and untangling of structures and discourses of art doesn’t.

    “Music works in a different realm to art,” Leckey continues. “What I like about music is that it’s rhythmic, melodic and all the rest of it but within that you can incorporate storytelling, politics, angst in the way that art can never quite do.

    Art – especially with politics – it’s very difficult to sublimate it in a way that music does. Music has some kind of innate politics to it I think because of who it’s made by. Art is essentially middle class, and when I talk about universalism I’m talking about class, really. Art is still elite, even though that word seems quite dead? – ?it’s still a bourgeois pursuit in a lot of ways. Music for me is a way of countering that.” Could the injection of rave into art be an attempt to satisfyingly simplify it, whilst shunning the bourgeois exclusivity of the art world?

    It was the inclusive nature of music that made rave so unifying. As a subculture it seemed to transcend race, class and sexuality. Even though drugs heavily factored into the equation the heartbeat of rave was music.

    Music – in particular acid house and later hardcore – was given a sort of celestial devotion by ravers, who’d decided to opt out of normality in search of excitement and adventure. Britain was grey, drab and lifeless and desperately lacking in prospects for young people.

    In contrast, raves were explosions of sound, colour and diversity filled with unknown opportunities and unexpected encounters? – ?they were a much needed departure from the dismal norm that had afflicted Britain. In the face of adversity ravers organised a way of escaping the depressing restraints of Thatcher-driven austerity and unemployment, creating their own communities based around a love of raving.

While designers were likely basing designs on their own psychedelic experimentation, there’s a science in using pattern as signifier. In 1926, German and American psychologist Heinrich Klüver studied the effects of hallucinogenic substances on users, and noted that the visuals they experienced were often recurring geometric patterns—dubbed “form constants”—in “highly saturated colors.” 

    The sense of freedom and a wilful naivety in approaching graphics is what made the imagery of rave culture so pure, fresh, and enduringly striking. There were no rules, but plenty of hedonism

    Attending a festival lets us immerse ourselves into the world with removed social pressures, and no expectations; we leave our everyday responsibilities of work or school.

    Socialization, the desire to interact with known and unknown individuals; is the most common motivator reported for attending musical events. Also, being among others is a socially innate and healthy behavior; isolation is against your nature. See opportunities for positive socialization interactions are rare occurrences in our day-to-day lives, but at a festival it is frequent.

    Leckey tells me: “I never doubt music partly because of its universalism. Dancing gives students a chance to express themselves freely and creatively. In other words, it serves as an outlet for emotional and physical release. This is especially beneficial for students who’d prefer to use movement rather than words to communicate, or express, their feelings.

    Effective communication. Many dances, like Rumba and Swing, require students to work as partners or teams to complete the moves. To do so, students must learn to communicate effectively - verbally and nonverbally - to follow cues and coordinate their moves. This also fosters cooperation and teamwork among students.

    Self regulation. Learning to dance requires increased focus and discipline. Over time, dance can help students focus their attention, control their emotions and manage their behavior when tough situations arise. This skill is also an essential tool for learning. Students with good self regulation can pay attention to activities, ignore distractions, carry out tasks and resist impulses.

    Acceptance of others. Dance is a universal language and can transcend all cultures. It allows students to forget about their differences and focus on one thing they all have in common: dance. It also gives them an opportunity to explore cultural dance forms from across the world, which also fosters acceptance and understanding of others.

    Self confidence. Dancing promotes a general sense of well-being in students. As they master new skills, perform in front of others and receive positive reinforcement, their confidence reaches new levels. And self-confident students believe in their abilities, get along well with others and are better equipped to handle challenging situations.

    I wanted to inquire into performance that has positive empowering potential, that can be vitalizing, connecting and enlivening us to our own energy and to the energies around us. 

    This led me back to the club and dance culture event, and its practices, particularly the rave movement, looking at the role of music, of the dancing, the crowd community, and how it can facilitate ecstatic experiences and be empowering on an individual as well as on a wider social level.

    rave events are particularly of a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual shamanistic vitalising and empowering spirit

    club events are whole immersive social and performative events where music and dance merge and are embodied by the crowd

    . It is a socio-spatio-temporal and bodily-emotional practice.

    “The rave/club culture is described as an arena of youth transformation made possible by the spatialization and performance of music, and thought dependent upon the way participants ‘negotiate liminality’ throughout the course of events” (St John Graham, 2004, p.11).

    Clubbing and especially rave’s dance music are predominantly emphasizing the rhythmical aspect of music, the beat and bass, which, when going through the strong and loud sound-system, become an intense sensory, bodily and viscerally felt experience as much as heard, especially the sub-bass, and initiates a new and utter physicality. It is pure energy.

    “Dancing within clubbing might be interpreted as an expressive form of thinking, sensing, feeling and processing which may be constituted through, as well as reflecting, strong relationships between clubber and the clubbing crowd, and in turn between the clubbing crowd and the society of which it is a part. Dancing within clubbing can be about […] a form of embodied resistance and source of personal and social vitality. (Malborn, 1999, p. 86-87)

    Potential ecstatic experiences or altered states, involving some form of transformation in consciousness, may be experienced:



    These experiences of playful vitality and ecstatic states can be refreshing and revitalizing and provide sensations of  strength and empowering individually and socially, in the moment but also beyond the clubbing event, infusing into the clubbers’ daily live.
