Introduction

I picked this topic because I am very interested in the health field and various diseases such as HIV. I have learned a little bit about HIV in Biomed, but don't know every detail. However, I do know that it is more controlled than it used to be. At first I didn't know much about what to chose as my topic, but I stumbled across the comment by Georgia representative Betty Price saying that HIV should be quarantined. It immediately sparked my interest and I wanted to know more about why she said it, was it taken out of context, and how did people respond. My stance on this issue is that quarantining people with HIV is highly unethical and shouldn't even be considered since it is primarily spread though needle sharing and sexual intercourse.

Reaction to Betty Price's Comments

This video starts by showing an AIDS and HIV 5k. They then summarize Betty Price's comments and reactions to them before interviewing various people from the 5k. Those interviewed discuss how they work to educate and prevent HIV spread, but it can be hard to debunk misconceptions about the disease. Many believe that politicians should think before they make those comments, one even asking if they would still do it if their family was affected. All were outraged, but plan to still educate on HIV. I like this source because it shows what everyday people think of the comments, but also what they plan to do regarding the disease. I also think it is fairly reliable since it is a reputable news source, even though it has everyday people speaking.

Tom Price's wife asks about 'legally' quarantining HIV patients

In this article, they begin by summarizing the basic facts most other article offer; however, this one offers direct quotes from Price. Some of these quotes comment on how patients of HIV "died more readily" in the past so now it is more pressing to "curtail the spread." This article adds some background for Price, mentioning her history as an anesthesiologist and her time serving on medical boards. It also emphasizes how Georgia has the 5th highest number of adolescent and adult HIV patients in the United States to provide some context for the question. Many human rights and LGBTQ groups were outraged and took to Twitter, calling her ignorant and insisting she should resign. This article didn't really have much to agree with, it was more just stating the facts. I agree with the tweet from activists that she definitely is against progress, however calling for her to resign and attacking her intelligence seems a bit much. This source is another fairly large news source, USA Today, therefore it is reliable and not surprisingly not very biased.

Tom Price's SHAMEFUL Wife Says People With HIV Should Be Rounded Up and Quarantined

This is a radio show that begins by talking about Betty Price's husband, which I don't really see the relevance of. Apparently he participated in some shady stock trading. This leads into the anchor calling Betty Price a disgusting and boring person. He continuously bashes her, saying you will be appalled and want to doze off. He plays the video of Price speaking. They compare it to going after a terror cell. He veers away from discussing HIV, instead discussing marriage equality, mocking Trump, and white bigotry. I don't really follow his train of thought. I think he took this topic as an opportunity to explain his ideas and bash various conservative politicians. Therefore, I don't think this source is very reliable. It is just two guys bashing various politicians with little substance. They don;t even really discuss HIV, instead they discuss white bigotry (they are white??).

Georgia lawmaker: Can people with HIV be 'legally' quarantined?

The article starts by mentioning Price's question about the legality of quarantining HIV patients at a public hearing. Her question was posed to Dr. Pascale Wortley, the director of HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Surveillance Section of the Georgia Department of Public Health. HIV and AIDS are serious diseases in the United States and pose a risk to others if not in treatment. However, the article mentions how the majority of HIV patients are receiving treatment and do not pose much of a threat to others. Advocacy groups like GLAAD were outraged, claiming Price is stopping progress and violating "basic decency." Mel Robbins said she was thankful Price was not a doctor that could violate HIV patients and their rights. Price has now backtracked, saying her comment was taken out of context and she only wanted to motivate people to make a change. I agree with Robbins and GLAAD, Price's comment was offensive and in no way an ethical route to stopping the spread of HIV. Personally, I think Price's comment in no way came off how she claims she meant. I think this source is fairly reliable because it is CNN, a widely known network, and they link all of their sources so you can check the quotes and facts for yourself.

An HIV Quarantine like Betty Price Wants Would Be Very Easy for the Government to Start

This article brings up the fact that quarantining is nothing new; the word can bring up images of Typhoid Mary or Kaci Hckox, who was quarantined with Ebola in 2014. This article is the first I've read to mention that Price called the number of people living with HIV "frightening." Another point they make is that state and federal agencies can quarantine for any "communicable disease." However, HIV is not on the list. In the 1980s people were supportive of a quarantine for AIDS, ID cards or tattoos for those with HIV, or HIV tests required for job applications. Many previous politicians have suggested quarantines or drastic crimes against those with HIV. I think this article is important for two reasons. First, it informs people that a quarantine on HIV is possible. However, it also shows how far we have come because most people no longer support a quarantine on HIV. This article is reliable because it is straightforward and not very biased. It also is from a fairly reputable source, Newsweek.

State Rep. Betty Price suggests "quarantine" for HIV patients

This is the actual video of Rep. Betty Price asking about the legal options to "curtail the spread" of HIV. You can clearly hear that she is struggling to form a thought, even mentioning in the beginning she struggles to organize her thoughts. In my opinion, her voice is boring and she sounds like even she has no clue what she actually wants to say. It is basically a minute of her struggling to ask how we can legally stop the spread of HIV. Clearly I don't agree with what she is saying; in no way is quarantining people with HIV a viable or ethical option. However, I can see how this might've been blown out of proportion since it isn't even the actual focus of the question. This source is reliable because it is the original video of Price that all quotes are taken from.

Conversation outside of class

I had a conversation with my mom where she saw both sides of the argument. On one hand, she compared quarantining those with HIV to how lepers were treated. She called this inhumane, which I agree with. On the other hand, she believes that Price probably didn't actually mean what she said. My mom believes that she most likely meant how is it being controlled, but she poorly chose her words. We also talked about how she has medical experience, so she probably is worried more about curtailing the spread rather than actually quarantining people. We both agreed that quarantining is not the answer to stopping the spread of HIV.

Reflection

After researching, I still think the idea of quarantining people with HIV is preposterous and everyone I talked with agreed. However, I don't think Price's goal was to solely say quarantine those with HIV; rather, I think her main point that something should be done to stop the spread was lost in the outrage regarding one small piece of her comment. I realized this through actually watching the exchange and talking with my mom. She probably should've worded her question better, but I don't think she meant to offend anyone on purpose. I do think some people are using this topic, along with others, to freely bash politicians they don't agree with, which I think is wrong. One of the sources also informed me that quarantining is more possible than we think, which is alarming. Overall, I think I participated a lot in class (it helps being loud and opinionated) and listened to others opinions well.
