The Point Elliot treaty required The Duwamish to sign away a large part of their land to the US government, and were guaranteed fishing and hinting rights in exchange. The US did not follow through with their promise and the Duwamish have been short-ended since then.

Construction of Ballard Locks

The Ballard Locks disrupted much of the natural resources the Duwamish depended on. The US created it to make easy passage for water transport between the pudget sound and Lake Union, but this created problems for Native Americans who had been living on this land for years prior. It disrupted fishery cycles, and caused many problems in the natural flow of the water and the environment around it.

Straitening the Duwamish river

The Duwamish River was a natural curving and bending river with high tides while the Duwamish people lived along it. Boats however were not able to sail along it, which lead to the idea of straitening. Once this happened it destroyed The Duwamish peoples way of life.

Debate still stands on Duwamish recognition status

There has been a relatively recent court ruling declaring to re-evaluate the Duamish tribes petition for recognition. This still stems back to the injustice from decades ago, when they were denied to be federally recognized, and shows their fight to get what they deserve from all those years ago.
