I define pedagogical design thinking as the process of fully understanding the circumstances of a learning environment and situation, and effectively designing how to tackle the objective with a solutioned-focus mindset. Designers conduct research and observations to create a full view of needs of students, and create specific plans as to how to meet each need, as well as assess the procedure and aftermath in order to make improvements for the future. Designers require an abundance of experience to help identify the areas of need and possible solutions to attempt. We then add on to this definition by implementing the component of technology into this thinking. This means to not only select the right media and technology tools for the design, but research and assess these tools thoroughly to find the most effective and strategic methods in order to help enhance the process of getting to the end goal.

Pedagogical design thinking with technology involves the instructor/designer using pedagogical (instructional practices and methods) and content knowledge to guide the precise incorporation of technology to enhance learning into the curriculum. Designing this curriculum involves the use of design thinking: researching (what are the needs?), defining (the end goal), creating (building the solution), and implementing (testing the solution). Combining these skills allows the instructor/designer to strengthen the learners' understanding through creative and dynamic learning environments.

Pedagogical design thinking sees the big picture when designing learning experiences and is an intentional, dynamic process that begins with empathy, considering students' needs and working towards thoughtful solutions. It’s reflective, never static, and ever-evolving, shaped by research, observations, and relationships. Teachers continuously adjust their approach to enhance learning, creating and recreating, always solution oriented with the basis of a growth-mindset, for both educators and students alike. This must be vulnerable and honest in reflection and willing to start/restart/fix/adapt. Technology plays a key role by increasing flexibility and adaptability, allowing for intentional media choices that foster growth and creativity. Rather than simply replacing traditional methods, technology serves as a transformative tool (SAMR) that expands possibilities - it is the bridge and the vessel! It is not just about choosing the media and resources but how we might enhance and transform with these in mind. As Dr. Gholdy Muhammad describes in Unearthing Joy, teachers are like “fashion designers,” constantly designing unique clothing pieces for their students, tailoring learning experiences to individual students, contexts, and content. Technology is the fabric, the thread when we create these meaningful learning experiences (clothing!) for our students and we must always cater to our unique students - it can't be a one size fits all approach.

After skimming the articles included in blackboard for this assignment I soon realized that I previously did not know much regarding design thinking. I now hold more knowledge about it and understand better about what it signifies and entails. The way I define and see and define pedagogical design thinking with technology is as a well-thought-out process for using technology to help student solve problems inside and outside of the classroom setting. It’s an approach that is based on evaluating your students needs and then designing solutions that address their individual needs directly. This allows us to create learning experiences that are learner-centered and technology-driven. It is a non-linear process where we need to empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This can help us become even more influential educators.

These thoughts are driven by previous knowledge held by the teacher and their approach to adapting the lesson to be further useful to all learners. It is the purposeful and intentional selection and blending of different technological resources to improve the effectiveness of the teaching. The technology should be incorporated in a creative way that helps students to learn more efficiently and allows for ideas to be expressed and shared more clearly and in more advanced ways. With Pedagogical design thinking, technology is utilized in a way that achieves goal learning outcomes and improves upon past methods. It should also be able to be assessed to ensure that the technology is in fact improving the learning process for students.

Design thinking has a very positive influence on the 21st century education. This is because in involves creative thinking and helps with problem solving. According to the article what is design thinking, the design process is characterized by being iterative, exploratory and sometimes a chaotic process. At the end of the day, design thinking is when educators examine the course content and figure out how they are going to incorporate technology in the lesson. As technology advances, the teaching methods need to be come advanced in order to be able to teach students properly.

Pedagogical Design Thinking is a process that analyzes students' needs, content, standards needing to be met, defining learning goals, and creating instructional tasks by utilizing various tools and resources including technology to enhance learning. It includes problem solving, creative thinking, the ability to visualize, while being interactive, exploratory, and sometimes chaotic throughout the process. A good designer should be flexible and have the ability to choose a strategy that best meets the requirements of the situation. Wise technology integration isn't just its use, but more how effectively you can utilize the technology. It also requires an understanding of learning theory to support technology. Research investigates ways to build on teacher expertise to support them in their design efforts. Most teachers develop design skills intuitively through experience, but new technological opportunities for design, can allow for teachers to rethink their practice, try new things and explore creative alternatives.
