Building Bridges: Case Management, Facilitation, & Parent Engagement - Strengthen your partnerships with families and enhance student success.

Work smarter, not harder! This training will focus on how to manage IEPs to minimize potential IEP hazards, thus making your life and that of the entire team easier! We will share strategies and practices for caseload management, including scheduling, communication, collaboration, facilitation, and follow-through. Practice opportunities will be provided.

The intended audience is for Case Carriers and Administrators.

Ms. Nix will review the IDEA's core mandates and procedural safeguards. She will then review the due process hearing decision driving this week's training for all attendees.

Attendees will better understand the thread of Educational Benefit, including how to develop present levels from assessment data, the connection between present levels and goals, and then goals and services. We will also practice what we have learned with a sample IEP and, time permitting, case managers will be able to review one of their own IEPs.

Participants from today's presentation will walk away with the understanding of the "why's" of inclusion, the continuum of preschool settings, placement considerations, LRE, and Early Childhood Evidence-Based Practices.

This presentation is a 60-minute information session on CAPTAIN Resources and Professional Development that can be used to Enhance Autism support and expertise through Evidence Based Practices. The goal of CAPTAIN is to raise awareness and capacity with in the community and educational system.

Angela will be presenting on the topic of: What tools teachers and staff can use to create classroom based interventions at the earliest signs of challenging behavior, the antecedents and consequences (ABCs) of behavior, what necessary steps to complete in the IEP documentation

process when challenging behavior impacts accessing education, and steps to de-escalate a behavior crisis.

In this 4 hour training series, trainees will learn about the principles of reinforcement to teach skills in a discrete trial training format, learn effective prompting procedures and learn how to teach functional replacement behaviors for maladaptive behaviors occurring in the classroom.

Ms. Lemos Horning and Ms. Nix will review best practices in completing assessments with multilingual and multicultural learners.

Objectives:

1. Determining when a bilingual assessment is necessary

2. Best practices when working with interpreters

3. Review of legally defensive assessments

4. Presenting assessment information and building trust with families

Ms. Mischke will be focusing on sensory processing skills and the best means of supporting students’ sensory needs in the classroom and school environments. She will be discussing multiple strategies to assist with self regulation,

and improve attention and focus for students presenting with

challenges in this area. Hyper and hypo-responsiveness to specific sensory systems (tactile, auditory, visual, vestibular, proprioceptive) will be covered, as well as helpful strategies for each area. Executive functioning skills (the ability to plan, monitor, and execute goals) and how to help support challenges in this area at various age ranges will also be covered.

Ms. Silverman, Ms. Larzul, and Ms. Nix will answer any and all questions arising from this week's training. Get ready to try and stump the attorneys!

● IEP team members’ roles and responsibilities

● The principles of effective and meaningful parent participation in the IEP process

● Addressing bias and incorporating culturally responsive practices for school special education teams

● Preparing for successful IEP meetings

● Conflict styles and scenarios, applying preventative and alternative dispute resolution skills, and tips for handling challenging conversations

Ms. Nix will present on the legal requirements for Assistive Technology (AT) and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). Topics will include discussions of what AT and AAC is, AT/AAC assessments, and a review of related caselaw.
