Treasure is what Santiago is striving for on his journey throughout The Alchemist. He first sees it in his recurring dream when a person is leading him to the treasure, however, he always woke up right before the treasure's location was revealed, but he knows that it is somewhere near the Egyptian Pyramids. At the end of the story, he finds that the treasure was actually back where his whole journey began, in the abandoned church.

How the treasure enhances the story.....

The treasure was the symbol that really held the most meaning in the story. This is because the whole story of the Alchemist centered on Santiago finding the treasure he dreamed about. He wanted to go find the treasure to fulfill his personal legend. If the treasure was not in the story, there wouldn't be much to the story. Also, the treasure isn't necessarily physical, and there may not be just one treasure. Santiago had many "mental" treasures along the way, such as finding himself in the desert. The treasure had enhanced the whole story, because it allows the reader to see what the treasure may be, and it also allows readers to find the treasure in the story.

Treasure in the Real World Outside Us

Treasure is used in a lot of real-world examples and in other pieces of literature. For example, we encounter treasure almost every day. Treasure can be physical or something you can possess, like money and gold. You can win the lottery and be awarded "treasure" (ie. money) or maybe you dug some treasure in California (ie. gold) and struck it rich. Treasure doesn't always have something that makes you rich, like money or gold. Depending on your viewpoint, anything can be considered a treasure. Treasure can also be mental, like love. Many texts of literature and movies include treasure. For example, in the Count of Monte Cristo, the Priest gives Edmond the map to find the treasure. Another example is the movie The National Treasure when the motivation of the movie is to find the treasure.

The treasure is a great thing that Santiago gains at the end of his journey. However, the tangible treasure isn't the only treasure that Santiago received. When Santiago wonders why he had to go to Africa if the treasure was in Spain all along, the wind answers with: "If I had told you, you wouldn't have seen the Pyramids. They're beautiful aren't they?" (166) Treasure came in two different forms-tangible, the physical gold and jewels, and intangible, the journey to get to the treasure. To make an analogy, the treasure was the finish line, while the journey was the whole track.
