Delaying in paying wages to your helper is strictly discouraged and may result in legal prosecution. According to the law in Hong Kong, you’re required to pay the wages to your helper upon the end of the wage period.

A wage period usually starts at the beginning of the month. After the month ends, you’re required to pay your helper within 7 days. For example, if your maid starts working on the 1st of March, the wage period ends on the 31st of March and her wage is due.

If you fail to pay within 7 days after the wage period, you’ll need to bear the interests applicable to the outstanding wage. Not only that, you’ll be breaching the law and liable to prosecution. Failing to pay wages to your maid may result in a maximum fine of HK$ 350,000 and a 3-year imprisonment.

If you fail to pay the wages after 30 days from the due date, the contractual agreement between you and your helper is automatically terminated. You’re then liable to pay not only the outstanding wages but also other payments that your helper is entitled to, including payment in lieu of notice, annual leave, a return ticket, and traveling allowance.

Need more help in paying your helper on time?
