How the Environment is Impacted From Fast Fashion

The environment is very negatively impacted by fast fashion because of the amount of waste ending up in nature. One of the main problems with fast fashion is that a lot of clothes are either being dumped into landfills or incinerated. Consequently, this leads to increased ocean temperatures and the rising of ocean sea levels. Stores like Shein have an estimate of making around 50,000 new garments per day. As a result, clothes are now more than ever ending up in landfills with another 92 million tons of waste. 57% of clothes that have been or are being discarded end up in landfills with other clothes. This leads to more greenhouse gasses being released into airways. These are just some of the ways that the Earth is badly affected by the results of fast fashion.

The Impact on People Working in the Fashion Industry

There are many ugly impacts on the people working to make clothes in the fashion industry. For example, some workers in the industry work 18 hours per day and only get paied around 4 cents per item they make. Therefore, many of these people live hard lives and are barely able to make ends meet. Around 80% of clothes are made by women between the ages of 18-24. So many women are not able to make a life for themselves and go to school because they have to work this job. Many people who work to manufacture clothes in Bangladesh only make about 96 US Dollars per month. Consequently, these people work long hours and get little pay which is hard for them to live off of. As you can see, workers are treated very poorly in the fashion industry and it must be fixed.

What You Can Do to Solve the Fast Fashion Problem

There are so many ways to solve the problem of fast fashion. One solution to stop fast fashion is to buy less clothes but have the ones you buy be more durable and resistant. This allows for the clothes you have to last longer so there are less clothes in landfills or burned. A goal fashion activists have to resolve the issue of fast fashion is to make clothes more recyclable. One way they will do this is turn clothes into raw fibers which allows them to make new clothes. A problem with clothes made in the fast fashion industry is that they are not good quality. So they are more inclined to rip or be torn faster. One thing you can do when this happens is sew or repair your clothes so you aren't putting them into landfills as often. These are just a few different ways to solve this problem. There are even more to explore.

Reflection of the Fast Fashion Project

Overall my opinions have changed about fast fashion from what they are before. At first I didn't have any idea what fast fashion was but I wanted to learn more about it. Now for example, I know a lot more about fast fashion like what it is and why it is happening. I may still shop at places such as H&M or Pacsun even though they have a fast fashion business because it is cheaper and easier to get clothes. Although, It feels better to know about the places I am shopping at and the effect my shopping has. This is why I think overall my opinions have changed from when I started this project.
