Everyone takes risks but what those risks look like are different for everyone. Some people take big risks and some take smaller risks. The amount of risk taken depends on the person and the situation. Some bigger risks include, “smoking, taking drugs, driving dangerously, drinking alcohol, unprotected, and/or underage sex, and criminal activities" (Consequences of Unhealthy Behaviors, 8). These are the most common risky behaviors and the ones people most often feel pressured into. Peer pressure is one of the most well known types of pressures, “Another well known factor that may lead young people to become involved in risky behaviors is due to peer pressure” (Consequences of Unhealthy Behaviors, 9). Peer pressure is when the people around you that are around your age are trying to pressure you into doing something.
Some ways to reduce the consequences of risks were stated in this chapter. Thinking through decisions can help prevent a ton of mistakes in the future. The book stated, “Sometimes decisions that turn out not to be so good are often made when young people (and adults) rush into making a decision or the decision is one which is more an outcome of peer pressure rather than one in which you have taken 'time out' to think through" (Consequences of Unhealthy Behaviors, 10). Thinking through a situation is hard for most people, but if you thoroughly think through everything then you will make the decision that is best for the situation. Another way that a person can avoid consequences is, “It often takes a courageous and brave young person to stand up for themselves, to be an individual and make a decision that may initially seem uncool but in actual fact is a more mature decision that places themselves or others in a safer space rather than a potentially dangerous one” (Consequences of Unhealthy Behaviors, 10). Teenagers often want to be cool and take risks to show that they are independent. This is how many people get into a lot of danger and it could effect their health in a very negative way. It takes a really strong person to step back and look at the consequences before taking that risk.

My sister was babysitting one day and playing on her skateboard at the same time. She did not wear a helmet when she was riding on her skateboard and she fell off. She came to me and told me that I would now be babysitting the kids she was supposed to be watching, because she hit her head and it really hurts. My mom took her to the doctor's and found out that she had a concussion. She was back and forth at school for at least three months. She could not do anything and she had to stay in a dark room for days. Now her brain is more prone to injury and with that one bad choice, she is unable to play in high impact sports. Her future has changed completely. If she just put a helmet on she could have saved this from happening. She did not take the time to step back and look at the consequences before she took the risk.
