L'opération Overlord  est au coeur de la stratégie comportant l'arrivée en masse des militaires alliés à l'Ouest. Par ce fait, un nouveau front est ouvert sur les plages en Normandie, qui sera gagné par les Alliés le jour J de la bataille. Pour contourner les forces côtières allemandes, ceux-ci sont bombardés et les soldats sont envoyés par parachute. L'effet de surprise est significatif puisque seulement 50 000 soldats allemands furent présents le 6 juin 1944.  (Vince, 2022, paragr. 1) En effet, grâce à l'opération Fortitude qui permit à détourner les forces allemandes dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais avec une fausse alerte de l'arrivée de l'ennemi. Le général le plus important de l'invasion Barbarossa est le Maréchal Joukov. En effet, ce maréchal Russe réussi à organiser la défense de Moscou et repoussa «in extremist» les allemands qui étaient aux portes de la capitale soviétique en octobre 1941. Il contribua également à coordonner les défenses soviétiques lors de la bataille de Koursk.

Un autre soldat qui sut se démarquer durant cette invasion est le chef de char allemand Michael  Wittmann. Effectivement, ce dernier était le plus redoutable chef de char de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec 130 destructions de chars et 130 destructions de canons. 117 des 130 chars qu'il a détruit furent des chars soviétiques lors de l'Opération Barbarossa.
