What Are You "Seeing?" by Maika Hefflefinger

Add News Clips or Personal Testimonies of what are the sort of social justices that you are seeing either locally in our Bay Area communities or in our U.S./global context.

The questions for the researcher to answer?
1) What is happening? What do you see is an injustice or potentially "bad" or harmful situation? Paint the situation for us using your own words so we don't have to read the article
2) Who are the people involved? Who is gaining from the situation? Who is losing?
4)What is happening? Why does it continue?
5) Why is it happening? Why does it continue?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Questions for the responded/feedback person to answer?
1) How do you feel about the situation or social justice issue your classmate is discussing?
2) Which Critical Concern(s) or Catholic Social Teaching Theme does this this current event apply to?
3) Do you see any action being done?

Hidden Homelessness - Van Living in the Silicon Valley

1) The primary concern that I am "seeing" in this video documentary is the unviable means for which people choose or are forced to live in the Silicon Valley with rent that has increased by 51% in the past few years. In other words, I am "seeing" a new form of Homelessness either chosen or forced which can be caused by the increased cost of living in particularly the Mountain View/Palo Alto area.
2) The majority of people who are impacted by the situation are those in the "gig" economy who are contracted out to for a temporary period of time. Often corporations or companies are taking advantage these people by creating situations where they take on multiple part time jobs to make ends meet, but then ending up working 2x more than full-time work without benefits or healthcare.
3) The people gaining include the corporations or companies themselves who cut costs by sacrificing the benefits of their blue-collared, part-time workers.
4) In this situation, people are being forced into inadequate means of housing and self-care including low energy van-living with minimal electric and water access.
5) This is happening because some groups of people in the Bay Area continue to reap the benefits of high-cost housing (like landlords and developers) and cheap labor (such minimum wage paid in the gig economy). Overall, the ignorance or complacency of the population who live in the Bay Area is causing this situation to remain here without improvement.

1). The level of contamination in the San Francisco Bay Delta Watershed is increasing as a result of rapidly increasing population and demand for water. The level of pollution is endangering local wildlife, contributing to the decline of numerous species of fish, among other species.
2). Individuals living in close proximity to the Delta may risk losing their homes and businesses due to climate change-induced flooding, as well as harshly impacting fishermen in the Watershed area.
3). The San Francisco government has neglected the proper treatment of the Delta Watershed, favoring the transferral of funds towards more expensive and wealthy housing districts.
4). The situation has the potential to cripple those in flood danger, as well as possibly risk high levels of contamination in the water of the Bay Area.
5). This issue has been left to substantially increase as a result of the overlooking and neglect from government officials, and continues due to its difficulty to completely resolve.

This also includes SF investigators and the District Attorney.
3. The women who was killed clearly does not gain. The two boys who killed her kind of gain because murder charges are not being filed.
4. The people involved are fighting for their lives and for their rights as citizens.
5. This is happening because the women was a drug addict and was supposedly involved in an altercation with the boys before they acted in self-defense. Although, violence is never the way, so this is also happening due to violent action.

In 2019, the Amazonian basin experienced the worst fires ever to hit in over a decade. The amazon is twice the size of India and is shared by eight countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname). However, 60% of the amazon is located within Brazil, thus the political situation in Brazil has a large impact on the region. The amazon rainforest is home to 30% of the world’s known species and approximately 390 billion trees. Moreover, in a 2010 IBGE census, 817,000 Brazilians classified themselves as indigenous. These people were mostly affected and have lost a lot due to land-use changes related to deforestation, urbanization and forest fires. Most fires within the Amazon tropical rainforest are anthropogenic rather than biogenic. Humans are responsible for illegal logging, deforestation efforts, agricultural burning, etc. Workers will cut the trees and leave them to dry and will set fire to them. When there is no transport or roads, timber cannot be sold and burning is the easiest way to clear the land. In recent years, budget cuts hav been made to the Brazilian Environmental Agency which have resulted in less manpower and resources to enforce the regions that are most affected.

“There are Better Ways to Help Women Than the Equal Rights Amendment”
1) This article goes in depth in the ways that the ERA is having a newfound following. There are women speaking out on the wage gap, pink tax and abortion rights.
2) The entire state is involved in a movement like this because it effects everyone. It is unlikely the Supreme Court would make rash rules such as making gender-specific bathrooms unconstitutional but changing around some laws can affect all of the United States regardless of race.
3) Women will be able to gain from this situation as hopefully the gap between men and women will vanish. Depending on a persons point of view, there could be several people who would find this change upsetting or not fair.
4) The situation is giving the people a way to speak out on issues that bother them. Women are voicing their opinions and are being heard.
5) This is happening because women are finding more and more flaws in the way men and women are treated. The more we learn about ourselves, the government, and eachother, the more women want to speak out and find a way to prevent any more unfair treatment from happening. This continues because not enough change is being done to satisfy those who are speaking out.

Gender violence
Summary: A women named Carla Stefaniak travelled to Costa Rica alone to celebrate her 36th birthday. She rented an Airbnb villa close to the airport. It was gated, in a safe neighborhood, and even had a security guard. The night before she was going to fly home she had a FaceTime call with her best friend who was going to pick her up at the airport the next day. When Carla’s friend came to pick her up she found out that Carla never made the flight. A week later Carla’s body was found near the Airbnb and the security guard was arrested. This situation left many questions like is it safe for a women to travel alone?
1. What is happening? Unsafe for women to travel alone because it has become easy for women to be taken a vantage of.
2. Who are the people involved? I have only scene cases of men.
3. Who gains from the situation? In this case no one because the man that did this to this women went to jail.
4. What is the situation doing to the people involved? Women are being killed or very traumatized.
5. Why is it happening? Why does it continue? I feel like some men want/feel more powerful than women. I hope this doesn’t continue but we can’t control other people’s actions. Women sadly have to be carful of there surroundings.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/25/travel/solo-female-travel.html

New Battle Over School Segregation Roils Little Rock

https://www.usnews.com/news/education-news/articles/2019-09-25/new-battle-over-school-segregation-roils-little-rock

1. Sixty-two years since segregation was ended in the Arkansas city, some people say education officials are turning back to their old ways. They are arguing that Little Rock will return back into an era of school segregation by establishing separate governing structures for majority white schools and majority black schools.
2. Parents, educators and community leaders are furious about the state's plan to relinquish only partial control of the city's schools.
3. Little Rock wins because they will get to control the schools system and the educators, students and parents lose because they don’t get a say in anything.
4. What is the situation doing to the people involved?
It’s dividing people because some are afraid that segregation will affect them and there will be discrimination and injustice in the schools again. The former members of the State Board of Education, state legislators, community activists and educators describe the decision as a slap in the face to the citizens of a city where the Little Rock Nine are memorialized permanently at the foot of the Statehouse
5. Nearly 80% of the 25,000 students enrolled in Little Rock public schools are students of color – black students account for 62% percent and Hispanic students account for 15% – compared to 19% of students who are white. But white students account for more than 50% of enrollment in the city's highest-performing schools. That means that under the newly approved system, there is a high probability that the majority white schools in a majority black school district will be the ones under local control.

Trump has signed several executive orders affecting immigration policy. The first, which focused on border security, instructed federal agencies to construct a physical wall “to obtain complete operational control” of the U.S. border with Mexico. Additionally, it called for an end to what it calls “catch and release” practices, in which certain unauthorized immigrants who were captured at the border would be allowed into the United States while they await court hearings. The second executive order focused on prioritizing deportation for unauthorized immigrants. In July 2019, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general reported overcrowding and prolonged detentions [PDF] at CBP facilities, and investigators found that detainees, including children, were sometimes held without access to beds, showers, or clean clothes for weeks.

The article talks about the houses and lives of normal citizens effected and that many firefighters have been sent to help, putting their normal lives on hold for others.
3.) Homeowners in the area lose homes and property, sometimes even animals. They loose most personal belongings. Firefighters lose time with family and time to do typical daily things, but also gain satisfaction and money from putting in extra time.
4.) The situation is damaging the earth and taking away large parts of people’s lives.
5.) It is said that fires like these are becoming common due to a change in climate. Climate change will begin to affect how they live and other financial issues.
3) No one gains from this situation since it comes from the earth. However, as people who live on this Earth, we are loosing from this situation. People who live on the coast are loosing their homes and we are loosing respect for our Earth the more we are harming it.
4) The situation is causing people to move and/or have damages to their homes.
5) The is happening because humans are contributing to global warming. The heat that gets trapped in the atmosphere reflects back on our Earth and melts ice caps and other glaciers. The water from these glaciers go into the water causing the sea levels to rise.

Summary: As of 2013 when it rains all the trash, oil, pesticides, fertilizers, chemicals, and other toxic substances get washed into the bay. The bay doesn’t get treated or filled when this happens. All the garbage on streets gets into the gutters when it rains and travels into the bay. Today in SF needles and waste from the homeless are getting into the ocean and Trump administration has issued an environmental violation to San Francisco.
1. What is happening? Due to people littering mixed with stormy days, the San Francisco bay is getting polluted.
2. Who are the people involved? Everyone
3. Who gains who loses? No one gains and all the sea life and people that enjoy the bay are losing.
4.what is the situation doing to the people involved? The pollution can impact plants, animals, and people.
5.why is it happening and why does it continue? It’s happening because some people don’t care or don’t know that this problem can effect so many living things. I feel like since people are not getting that effected by it, they see it as not a big deal but the animals that we love to eat or pet at aquariums are being affected. I think it continues because the lack of knowledge on the subject and the great impact it has.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/02/san-francisco-epa-water-pollution-trump
https://baykeeper.org/our-work/controlling-urban-storm-water-pollution

Decisions like this affect loads of people as they all have different beliefs of what we should do. However at the end of the day the decision belongs to the women who is/is not getting an abortion.
3) Women are able to gain from this situation as the story of an inspired and confident women can give hope to those struggling with the same situation. Those who disagree and feel abortions are unjust would loose in this situation because their opinions are not asked for or needed regarding someone who has no tie to them.
4) Getting an abortion for this lady helped her create a better more successful further for herself. After her abortion, several years later she was able to give birth to two children who are healthy and educated on the topic. She feels she has nothing to hide and wants her kids to know how much she loves them.
5) Abortions can happen when someone was raped, sick, or not ready to raise a baby. This continues because some women are not able to afford contraception and/or suffer from rapists actions. It will continue because every women has a right to her body and can make a choice for her life. Others should not decide for her especially if it does not directly affect them in any way.

British women of Muslim and other minority groups are increasingly being pressured into polygamous relationships or left without child support when relationships break up because UK law does not offer adequate protection to spouses in religious marriages, campaigners have warned.
2. The men who are forcing these relationships and refusing to legally register the unions are winning. And the women who are forced into these relationships are losing.
4.

Melanie Gagucas

On Dec. 3, 2019 a 20 year old woman was stabbed twice and died. Ceren Ozdemir was a 20 year old ballerina teacher for children at a school in Ordu. As she was opening the door to her home and man walked up behind her, asked a question to grab her attention and attacked. The people involved are the victim, her family, the attacker and the women of Turkey. The attacker Mr. Arduc, the attacker, was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Ceren Ozdemir is one of 474 femicides. These are murders of women by men because they are women, as the WHO defines it. According to a We Will End Femicide Platform, a women’s rights group, the murders of women in Turkey have increased in the past decade. Between 2008 and 2017, 2,025 women were murdered by men in Turkey. Within the past two decades, Turkey urbanized rapidly which gave great opportunities to women for work, leisure and social mobility. However, many Turkish men failed to accept the possibilities and prominence in the public space that the economic and social transformation were offering women. Most women were killed by their husbands, fathers or brothers because they insisted on their own choices in marriage, work, clothing and appearance. In 2011, Turkey led the ratification fo the Istanbul Convention. The country followed it up by passing a law to protect women in 2012. After Ms. Ozdemir’s murder, the interior ministry introduced a ruling that required training security forces and the confiscation of ;incensed guns from men accused of domestic violence. According to Turkish law, applications of women seeking protection from violence are to be handled within 24 hours. A woman and her children may be settled in a shelter affiliated with the government.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/04/opinion/turkey-women-murders.html

On November 25, 2019 the French government unveiled new measures to combat domestic violence in light of growing awareness of the sometimes deadly toll it has taken on women in France. However, the proposal lacked funding to truly be effect. Thousands of people marched in paris and other cities to protest gender-based violence in France, last year 121 women were killed by surrender or former partners. Participants wore purple, held up the names, pictures and ages of victims around the country and has also warned of an epidemic of ‘femicide.” Th people affected are women. An estimated 219,000 aged 18-75 are targets of physical or sexual violence. The prime minister said that the government will increase efforts in schools to raise awareness of gender-based violence, open a round-the-clock domestic violence hotline, hire more specialized workers in police stations and increase treatment of violent partners to avoid repeat offenses. The prime minister also stated that the government would change the law to recognize that victims of abuse can be under the psychological control fo their abusers, unable to act independently. The government will also act with doctors to ease confidentiality restrictions in cases where ther is n “immediate danger” of renewed violence against the victims. France’s lower house of Parliament has also adopted legislation to increase the use of electronic bracelets to help judges and police officers enforce restraining orders. Advocacy groups have allowed a surge in awareness of domestic violence. However, it is said that next year the government would spend 360 million euros, or nearly $400 million, on the fight against domestic violence and A report last year from the High Council for Gender Equality, a governmental advisory body, estimated that it would take at least 500 million euros annually to effectively reduce domestic violence. Women lose in this situation and the government gain with the money they have not spent.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/25/world/europe/france-domestic-violence.html?searchResultPosition=16

The authors of the article are stating that scientists and oceanographers believe global warming is to blame for the change in the oceans currents.

Who are the people involved? Who is gaining from the situation? Who is losing?

Humans are involved in this because our current lifestyles leave a large eco footprint and affect our Earth’s climate. Why does it continue?

The Ocean’s currents are speeding up creating a large shift in the ecosystem which will affect most of the earth in the long run. It will continue because humans are not making drastic enough changes to lessen their green house gasses or eco foot print.

Why is it happening? Why does it continue?

Climates naturally change but animals and humans are given enough of a grace period that they would evolve with the earth as it changes but due to our large use and dependence on fossil fuels and toxic nonrenewable resources, we are rapidly accelerating the warming of the earth and it will kill lots of animals and cause intense weather patterns. This will continue until the earth is uninhabitable for life unless we change our lifestyles and the way our societies function.

These women pleaded to have been discriminated against as women and as older people.

1) This effects older women in media everywhere, as they become “less appealing” to audiences and are pushed aside to bring in less experienced employees. And effects all women as it is basing what we watch in how others look and not their abilities or worth ethic.
2) all women suffer a loss and hopefully have gotten s good settlement in the lawsuit.

Naming a street after MLK harder than expected

Based on the specific neighborhood or city, it can take weeks or years to name a street after the infamous Dr. Martin Luther King, who had brought great change and solidarity to the US in ditfficult times. So to name a street after him is the least we can do.

1) I can see that some white areas don’t see the need for another street named after him or are against it in the first place. Yet having his name all around us will remind of us the work he did and the work we must all continue.
2) it affects the African American communities everywhere as they deserve to have a representation of their pride and worth around like every other culture and race should have. And it gains for white community memebers as they can just keep denying the right for his name to be on our street signs.
3)This happens because even though it’s been years and years there are still people out there who believe other races especially regarding black people in American that they are not equal to others such as white people. And breaking down the facts we can see they are people, and the mistakes we use as 4xcuses are because of the labels and hardship white people place on them.
