The song constantly goes on to talk about the advice that has been given to the speaker, and briefly speaks on where he could apply them. When he finds himself in times of trouble, in his hour of darkness, when the night is cloudy. These are words that many of the boys could sing to themselves when having feelings similar to these. This figure, Mother Mary, that says the words "let it be." however, is also a figure herself, and is the reason that it relates so much. The boys move on so quickly and take the deaths and such with such lightness is because of their faith in their figure, in a higher power, or in being rescued. They have a very 'let it be" attitude with their situation, which could be both damaging and advantages, in the ways that they are left less traumatized due to not settling and pondering these events, but they are also traumatized enough that these things will stick with them for the rest of their lives, whenever the decide to settle. Verse two represents it very well, saying "when the brokenhearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer," and "for though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see there will be an answer." These words are pretty transparent, and show that, though there are two separate groups of people, wanting very different things, they, in hindsight, will come to understand that there is or was nothing to do but let it be, to move on and have faith in their figure. The repetition shows how often the boys are having to repeat it, how often the boys are having to step back and do nothing bit have faith in themselves and in their figure, in their Mother Mary.

This song constantly tells about falling asleep and falling into a nightmare, which I think represents the reality of actually being on an island without adults or rules or guidance. You want to try to keep awake so that you are not having to deal with being on the island. A line that particularly relates is "a nightmare tape loop of what went wrong yesterday," which can represent any of the deaths, any hunting, or anything.

This song is more about actually becoming savage, and I think that it relates more to Jack than anyone. He begins knowing that he can't turn back now that he's started turning, and is somehow aware of how he's changing. The person that he's singing about would represent his younger self, or him before the island. He is marrying the sea, not letting things change his mind, meaning that he is accepting his ways and is going to happily continue on with his life as a savage, and as carelessly as he pleases. The song constantly relates the feeling of heroin to a girl, which I think also translates to becoming savage to the drug. It spills the blood of many, and though you see how it hurts and kills the people around you, for some reason, you still refuse to stop because it just feels too good.

This song shows an unusual obsession for fire. The hook relates the most, saying, "all you have is your fire, and the place you need to reach," which obviously represents the chant that seems to go on Ralph's head, how they needed to keep up their fire, and just how much it meant to him. "Don't you ever tame your demons, and always keep them on leash," refers to the slight savagery that Ralph has, all while knowing when it was too much and doing no good. The voices die with him, representing the the irony in them being found because of the smoke, as Ralph neared his death. The closer he got to his death, the more the voices telling him that the fire was still important died down. In the end, he again realizes that all he truly had was fire, and the place, his rescue, that he needed to reach.

This song is also about falling victim to something, and coming together to overcome it. The first verse is actually about becoming infatuated with the beast and living a savage life. "When I look up on it's face," can directly relate to looking into the face of the Lord of the Flies, showing how easily mesmerized you can get by it, and then moving on to falling in love with the way it makes you feel once it's consumed you, "hold it in a sweet embrace." "When I enter in that place, I'll sing it's praise," is saying that from the outside, it's nothing to love, nothing to be praised, but from an inside perspective, it looks so amazing and is so easy to love and worship. You start to love the lifestyle of the savage, living without rules, without parents, doing as you please, like every little boy's dream. "If we lift our voices high, evil forces pass us by, and our cause will never die," speaks on coming together and tending to the fire, the cause, which they don't realize until the end would have benefited them more than any hunting. Of course, Ralph and Piggy knew that all along, and represents the outro, "enlighten up my friends," and repeats because of Piggy's constant egging on of the idea, similar to right before his death when he finally starts to make the comparison between the just way and the unjust way of leading. The whole way through the book Piggy sings this, and only towards the end do people start to understand, showing the correlation between the overall meaning of the song and the weight of the final line being sung on it's own, in contrast to the rest of the outro being sung in a full choir. Overall, the song ends with the heaviness and the emptiness of Piggy's song, and the weight of his death. Afterwards, showing the wisdom in his words, far beyond his years. He was truly a beacon of hope and an amazing thinker.

It Will Come Back - Hozier

This song best shows the representation of giving into their savagery, or of staying away from it. It shows the internal conflict that many of them likely faced, and it shows it very clearly. You know better, babe. Than to look at it, talk to it like that. Meaning that of course the boys know better than to act this way, but it's so intriguing. Later in the song, it repeats it's sentiment, saying you know better babe, than to smile at me, hold me just like that. The significance of the repetition and the changing of the word from it to me shows that it's become much more personal, and the "it" that they need to stay away from, the beast, the savage part of themselves, is beginning to become a part, or a larger part of themselves. "Don't give it a hand, offer it a soul, honey that's how it sleeps, leave it to the land, this is what it knows," seems to be a list of precautions to keep the boys away from the beast, showing the game that it plays, how easily it could consume them like they had heard before, almost like a monster from a fairy tale. "Don't let it in with no intention to keep it," shows that it's a permanent disease almost, that once you have become the beast, you'll never really turn back. This is also repeated with a "me" instead of an "it," again, to show a personal relationship between the boys and the beast. "I know who I am, when I'm alone; something else when I see you," is more so directly related to how the boys feel away from the beast, being self-aware, and then not knowing how to control themselves when the beast is back. "It can't be unlearned, I've learned the warmth of your doorways. Through the cold, I'll find my way back to you." meaning that once the boys have fallen victim to becoming the beast, they have no choice but to be engulfed in it's metaphorical warmth, representing the rawness in being the beast. It's cold out, so they crave the warmth. "Oh, please, give me mercy no more! It's a kindness you can't afford!" I think that this is almost ironic, you would want to believe that you can cut yourself some slack, since you are the beast, but the beast is harsh and has no mercy for anyone. It had no mercy for Simon or any of the boys' vulnerability, and "can't afford" any kindness in general. It's a sarcastic play on the beasts harshness. The "don't you hear me howling, babe," and the repetition of it shows the impending temptation of giving into the beast, the way it's always there, it never goes away, never gets quieter until you give into it.

This song is another that speaks on a relationship, though this one is more about the one person in the relationship denying another's trust, wandering off and doing as they please without any regard to what the other wants. "I wake up feeling like you just won't play right, I used to know but know that shit don't feel right," refers to the original relationship between Simon and the beast, when he has made acquaintances with it, versus when it starts to go behind his back and convince him to do things he wouldn't normally do, and begins to take him over. I think it could also represent an internal relationship between Jack and himself, between the Jack that used to exist, the rule abiding Jack, and the one that wreaks havoc on the island. The hook, "stay woke," "they gone find you," and "now don't close your eyes," refers really more to letting your guard down against the beast, or against the savage part of yourself, saying that if you let your guard down or ignore the risk of turning your back on it, it could hurt you or your relationship. It can sleep with other people, or slowly start to consume you and ruin your life. The "too late, you wanna make it right but now it's too late," refers to wanting to turn back and right your wrongs, un-kill the people that you've killed, but you can't and you have to move on, or let it be. You can no longer right your wrongs, there's no turning back now...

This song tales about a woman who is not named, but is regarded as some sort of irresistible spirit. You can tell that he has already been involved with her to some extent, although he never elaborates. The song is about how he regrets is involvement, and how no one ever told him how terrible she was. In hindsight he sees that she was wrong, but before his thoughts were, "how would I know? why should I care?" I think that she represents murder in terms of Lord of the Flies, how, once they stepped on the island, once they met her, they had no idea how terrible murder was. As soon as they were done with her, with the act, she wasn't there.

This song represents an abusive relationship, and how its so easy to both love and hate. It hurts him but he also loves it. I think it represents the theme of savagery vs. civilization. For a little while, Ralph and the other kids battle between loving being so savage and damaging so much, and knowing that it is wrong but denying that it is. The boys know that what they are doing is a crime, that they should not want it as much as they do, but there is something so sweet and so right about loving it and wanting it.

This song represents Jack in the way that shows how exactly Jack idolizes trouble and rebelling, going against what may be considered the "normal" thing to do. The line who needs stupid books?" in particular shows his attitude towards Ralph, and towards the basic idea of doing what they want. He would rather do what he wants. Instead of reading, he rather play guitar. Instead of tending to a fire, he would rather hunt.

The theme of this song is being able to grow out of difficult situations, and represents Ralph. In the hook, he uses a cab ride as a metaphor for life passing by, the streetlights acting as happenings and developments in his life, simply passing by him. He can do anything about the streetlights except watch as they pass him by, waiting to get to his final destination. I think that his final destination can represent his death. He knows that he has to die eventually, and towards the end of the book he begins to expect it sooner rather than later, but he just is not there. I think the outro is also very representative of his time on the island, how the good lord gives and the good lord takes away. The good lord gave him friends an opportunities on the island, but it also takes away those things just as quickly.

This song is very vulgar, but I think it represents how Ralph would have reacted to the death of Piggy. Instead of something like "your blood was spilled on the couch where we had first kissed," is more like your blood was spilled on the beach where we had first met, instead of a romantic relationship they have more of a friendship and a complementary relationship. I think in the end Ralph very much appreciated his friendship, and was entirely torn up when he died. If Ralph had carried him to wash him, he would be as light as a backpack or a t-shirt, meaning that the death was so quick and so sudden that it barely impacted anyone, it had no weight. Instead of living large, Piggy had a great influence on the group. Instead of screaming when he came to, he would have yelled out his opinion just as loudly as before his tongue was cut out. He continues to repeat his actual feelings with "but I don't like it," showing the simplicity of the reaction to the death and the youth, the child inside him that does not know how to react to the death.
